City council approves to expand city limits

The city of El Paso made moves that will expand the city limits and ease traffic for drivers on the far east part of town.

Council approved the annexation of 310 acres of land located southwest of the intersection of Montwood Drive and John Hayes Street. Currently, that is where Montwood Dr. ends.

Eighty acres were donated by the property owner and will be used to create flat fields for football and soccer teams. The fields will include walkways and bicycle pathways.

The rest of the land will be used to construct new developments with more than 1,100 homes.

City Representative Michiel Noe said it was a good deal for the city.

“It’s extremely difficult to get 80 acres of continuous land in one place.

We can get a little here and a little there. What the community is looking for, these american football leagues and soccer leagues, what they’re looking for is a place to hold tournaments,” said Noe.

City council also annex five acres at the intersection of Zaragoza and Pebble Hills.
Once the land is annexed, Pebble Hills will be connected all the way through Zaragoza.

Currently, there is a gap on Pebble Hills, forcing drivers to take a detour on a very-busy Zaragoza.

Noe said the annexation process should be complete by April of 2015.
