Hot Today, But Slightly Cooler; Storm Chances Increase Late Week

The Borderland will remain hot today, but temperatures will be a few degrees cooler compared to Tuesday as the upper-level high shifts slightly west.

The mountains will have a better chance of seeing thunderstorms this evening, particularly across the Sacramento Mountains. Isolated storms are expected, with a 25% to 35% chance of thunderstorms. The biggest concern will be strong outflow winds, which could gust up to 50 mph.

Some of those thunderstorm outflows could travel into El Paso and western Hudspeth County overnight. However, little to no meaningful rainfall is expected with these outflows.

Storm Chances Increase Thursday

Moisture will increase across the region Thursday. Forecast models are showing spotty thunderstorms developing across the lowlands Thursday afternoon.

Friday will bring a similar amount of moisture, although the best chance for showers and thunderstorms will shift toward the mountains. Temperatures will also trend slightly cooler, with lowland highs falling to around or just below 100 degrees.

Monsoon Pattern Builds This Weekend

As we head into the weekend, the ridge of high pressure will shift east, helping establish a stronger monsoonal pattern across the region.

However, most of the moisture Saturday and Sunday is expected to remain concentrated near the Arizona-New Mexico border. That will favor scattered showers and thunderstorms west of the Continental Divide.

The lowlands will stay warm, with temperatures running 4 to 8 degrees above normal. A few isolated storms could still develop across portions of the Rio Grande Valley and southern New Mexico.
