DPS increases enforcement efforts this Labor Day weekend

AUSTIN, Texas (KVIA) – The Texas Department of Public Safety is increasing traffic enforcement efforts across the state for Labor Day weekend.

As part of the Operation Crash Awareness Reduction Effort (CARE), more troopers will be out on the road from September 4-7.

The operation is a specialized campaign in which Texas Highway Patrol (THP) Troopers look for drivers who are speeding, intoxicated or not complying with other laws.

“As Labor Day weekend marks the unofficial end of summer, we know many Texans will be hitting the road to celebrate with family and friends,” said Texas Highway Patrol Chief Bryan Rippee.

During last year's Labor Day enforcement campaign troopers issued more than 63,015 citations and warnings including:

• 5,233 for speeding.
• 1,594 for no insurance.
• 346 for individuals without seat belts or child seat restraints.

Authorities remind drivers to make responsible choices while driving.

Drivers are also encourage to avoid distractions and make alternate transportation plans if they plan to drink alcohol.
