ABC-7 Storm Track Weather First Alert: Storms Return to the Region as Heat Blast Continues

Storm chances are increasing across the Borderland as a passing disturbance helps reshape the weather pattern across the area.

Storm chances increase tonight

Moisture and lift associated with the passing disturbance will give the entire region a chance for thunderstorms.

The area mountains will have the best chance of storms, with a 30% to 60% chance, while the lowlands have a 20% to 40% chance of isolated thunderstorms.

The main threats from storms will be localized flash flooding and gusty outflow winds. The flash flood threat will be especially important in the mountains, where storms could produce locally heavy rainfall.

Storm activity could continue well into the overnight hours as storms move southwestward.

Thursday stays unsettled

Thursday's weather pattern will remain similar, although storm coverage across the lowlands is expected to decrease slightly as high pressure strengthens over Arizona and New Mexico.

Even with fewer storms, the threat for localized flash flooding and strong outflow winds will remain wherever thunderstorms develop.

Heat returns Friday and Saturday

A shift toward drier, continental air arrives Friday, bringing a noticeable decrease in storm activity across the lowlands.

Storms will become mainly confined to the area mountains and western New Mexico on Friday and Saturday.

The tradeoff will be hotter temperatures. Friday and Saturday are expected to be the hottest days of the week, with lowland temperatures reaching as much as 10 degrees above average.
