UTEP secures first win of 2026 season against Texas Southern

El Paso, Texas -- UTEP picked up its first win of the 2026 season Saturday night, defeating Texas Southern at the Sun Bowl after opening the year with a loss to Oklahoma.

The Miners' offense found its rhythm early behind quarterback EJ Colson, who helped UTEP build momentum throughout the night.

Colson completed 6 of 9 passes for 132 yards and two touchdowns in the first half. He also added a rushing touchdown as the Miners continued to put pressure on the Texas Southern defense.

Kam Thomas led UTEP on the ground with 92 rushing yards and a touchdown in the first half. Cash Cheeks added 13 rushing yards and a touchdown.

UTEP's defense also made key plays to keep the Miners in control. Esteban Guillory intercepted a Texas Southern pass in the second quarter, giving UTEP another opportunity to extend its lead.

Texas Southern managed 132 passing yards and scored 21 points through the first two quarters, but UTEP's offense continued to answer.

The Miners entered the game looking for their first win after falling to Oklahoma in the season opener.

With the victory, UTEP moves to 1-1 on the season and will continue its 2026 campaign next week.
