EPISD approves new tax rate; Who will be paying more?

KVIA

EL PASO, Texas (KVIA) -- On Tuesday, the El Paso Independent School District board unanimously approved a new tax rate that costs the average homeowner about $114 more a year on their tax bill.

According to documents from EPISD, last year the taxes due on the average home in the district were $1,179. This year, they will be $1,294.18.

The adopted tax rate is $1.0745 per $100 of taxable property valuation, which is below the voter-approval rate of $1.0789 per $100 property valuation.

Under the Texas Constitution, for most homeowners, the first $140,000 of their property value is exempt from school taxes.

Those who are 65 and older, or people with disabilities, get an additional $60,000 exemption.

Veterans with a 100% disability rating are exempt from all property taxes in Texas.

According to EPISD, the average taxable value of a home after exemptions last year was $109,167. This year it's $120,455.
