ABC-7 First Alert: Much Wetter Pattern Takes Over the Borderland This Week

The Borderland will see a relatively quiet start to the week before a significant increase in moisture brings several days of widespread rain and thunderstorms from Tuesday through Thursday.

A weak backdoor cold front (coming in from the NE) is moving southwest from northeastern New Mexico. The front is expected to reach the eastern portions of the Borderland late Monday night and move into the central area after midnight.

This could bring a few overnight showers or thunderstorms, particularly across the Rio Grande Valley.

Much wetter Tuesday through Thursday

The biggest change arrives Tuesday as the storm system moves into the Great Basin and pulls increasingly deep moisture northward.

As a result, scattered showers and thunderstorms are expected to develop Tuesday afternoon and continue through Tuesday night into Wednesday morning.

A Flood Watch is in effect for much of the forecast area Tuesday into Wednesday as repeated rounds of storms could produce locally heavy rainfall and flooding.

Wednesday remains somewhat uncertain because the amount of cloud cover left behind from Tuesday night could influence how much instability develops. Even so, numerous showers and thunderstorms are expected to continue Wednesday into Wednesday night.
