Chamberino residents begin cleanup after heavy rain, flooding

CHAMBERINO, New Mexico (KVIA) -- The rain may have moved out, but residents in Chamberino are still dealing with the aftermath of heavy storms and flooding across southern New Mexico today.

Mud, standing water and damaged roads have created challenges for people trying to return to their normal routines.

The National Weather Service issued flood alerts this week as heavy rain moved through the region. Chamberino was among the communities identified as vulnerable to flooding, particularly in low-lying areas and places near arroyos and drainage systems.

Doña Ana County also reported several road closures following the storms, including Lopez Ave near Via Iglesia in Chamberino.

For residents, the work continues even after the water begins to recede.

Some are cleaning up mud and debris, checking their property for damage and trying to determine whether roads and other access points are safe to use.

With the ground already saturated, additional heavy rainfall can increase the risk of more runoff and flash flooding. The National Weather Service has warned that low-lying areas, arroyos and locations with poor drainage can be especially vulnerable.
