Ysleta ISD Voter-Approval Tax Rate Election

KVIA, File

Voters will decide whether to allow the Ysleta Independent School District to raise its tax rate beyond what the state allows to save its financial status.

The YISD Board of Trustees unanimously approved the voter-approval tax rate election (VATRE) in August. It would generate up to $5.5 million a year by moving some property tax revenue toward daily operations.

The board also approved a tax rate of $1.19 per $100 property valuation, which is higher than the $1.15 rate it could have adopted if it didn't approve the VATRE. If voters reject the rate, the board would have to adopt the lower rate.

What you will see on the ballot:

“THIS IS A TAX INCREASE. Ratifying the ad valorem tax rate of $1.1954 per $100 valuation in the Ysleta Independent School District for the current year, a rate that will result in an increase of -1.70 percent in maintenance and operations tax revenue for the District for the current year as compared to the preceding year, which is an additional -$992,296.04.”
