ABC-7 First Alert Continues: Coldest Temperatures of the Season Arrive, Strong Winds and Blowing Dust Continue

EL PASO, Texas (ABC-7) — El Paso and the Borderland are in for a significant cooldown, with the coldest temperatures of the season so far arriving tonight. Temperatures will dip into the low 40s across much of the lowlands, while mountain communities prepare for freezing conditions.

The Sacramento Mountains could see temperatures fall into the low 20s in some areas early Saturday morning. Overall, temperatures are expected to run 15 to 20 degrees below normal for this time of year. The good news is that warmer temperatures are expected to return by the end of the weekend.

Strong Winds and Blowing Dust Remain a Concern

Along with the colder weather, strong easterly winds will continue through tonight and early tomorrow making it feel colder.

A Quiet Weekend Before Rain Chances Increase Next Week

Winds are expected to gradually subside, and rain chances will remain limited for much of the weekend. However, a developing upper-level low could bring a better chance for showers to the western half of the region Sunday morning as the system moves east.

Looking ahead to next week, another storm system is forecast potentially increasing rain chances across the Borderland. There is also a potential flooding concern if widespread rainfall develops. Still, confidence remains low regarding the timing, coverage and potential impacts of midweek rain. Forecast details will become clearer as the system develops.

For now, the main concerns are the season's first significant chill, strong winds and blowing dust through tonight. Keep a jacket handy, drive carefully in dusty conditions and stay tuned to ABC-7 for updates on the evolving forecast.
