ABC-7 First Alert Continues – Storm chances increase as unusually moist air moves into the Borderland

The Borderland is heading into an active stretch of weather, with multiple rounds of thunderstorms, the potential for severe weather and an increasing threat for flash flooding through the weekend.

Thursday brings the biggest concern

The storm will begin lifting northeast across Southern California and southern Nevada Thursday afternoon. Scattered to numerous thunderstorms are expected, especially along and west of the Rio Grande. Storms Thursday afternoon could produce damaging wind gusts, large hail and even an isolated tornado or two, particularly along and west of the Continental Divide.

Severe weather and flooding continue Friday

A piece of energy will break away from the main storm Friday, keeping the atmosphere unsettled.

Some drier air will begin moving into far western portions of the area, but much of the region will remain favorable for thunderstorms.

Another Marginal Risk for severe weather is in place across the central portions of the forecast area Friday. Flash flooding will remain a concern, especially where repeated thunderstorms move over the same locations.

Another round of storms Saturday

The second storm will provide another source of concern Saturday, shifting the focus for thunderstorms toward areas east of the Continental Divide. Moisture levels will decrease somewhat, but that will still be enough to support heavy rainfall.

Drier weather returns Sunday

The storm begins lifting away Sunday morning, allowing drier air to spread across the region from west to east.
