ABC-7 First Alert Continues – Severe Storms tonight and This Weekend Across the Borderland

An active weather pattern will bring increasing chances for showers and thunderstorms across the Borderland through the weekend, with the greatest potential for strong to severe storms east of the Rio Grande.

A south-southwesterly flow aloft combined with a developing pseudo-dryline near the Rio Grande Valley will help trigger scattered to widespread showers and thunderstorms during the late afternoon and evening, particularly across eastern areas. There will be the threat for large hail and damaging wind gusts especially across the Rio Grande Valley and areas farther east through the middle of the evening.

Saturday Could Bring Multiple Rounds of Storms

Saturday's setup will be very similar, but there is a greater potential for multiple rounds of thunderstorms. This could increase the threat for heavy rainfall and localized flooding, although storms are expected to move relatively quickly.

A Flood Watch may eventually be needed if confidence in repeated rounds of storms and higher rainfall totals increases. For now, forecasters are holding off on issuing one.

Storm Chances Continue Into Early Next Week

Rain chances will remain elevated, ranging from slight chances near the Rio Grande Valley to likely chances farther east Strong instability could still support a few severe thunderstorms.

Temperatures will remain around 5 degrees above average through Sunday and Monday.
