ABC-7 First Alert Continues: Rain and Storms Return to the Borderland, With Flooding Possible Through the Weekend

EL PASO, Texas (ABC-7) — A wet and unsettled weather pattern is setting up across the Borderland, with rounds of showers and thunderstorms expected Tonight through Sunday. Moisture moving into the region could bring periods of heavy rain and localized flooding, while stronger storms may develop Friday afternoon, especially west of El Paso.

Tonight: Rain Chances Increase

A southwest flow of air ahead of a Pacific upper-level low is helping draw substantial subtropical moisture from Chihuahua into southern New Mexico and West Texas. Some of that moisture is associated with Tropical Storm Vance.

Scattered showers and thunderstorms are expected to develop first across eastern portions of the region Thursday afternoon before expanding across the Borderland into the evening. With plenty of moisture in place, some instability and slow-moving storms, locally heavy rainfall could lead to flooding in vulnerable areas.

Rain and thunderstorms are expected to continue into the overnight hours, so residents should remain alert for changing conditions, especially in areas prone to flash flooding.

Friday: Another Round of Storms, With Stronger Weather Possible

A brief lull in rainfall is expected Friday morning, but the break may not last long. Another disturbance moving into western New Mexico during the early afternoon will help trigger a new round of showers and thunderstorms, spreading from west to east across the region.

Storm development is not expected to become widespread until later Friday afternoon. However, conditions will be more favorable for stronger thunderstorms compared with Thursday, particularly across western portions of the Borderland.

Additional showers and storms could linger into the overnight hours, keeping the region unsettled heading into Saturday.

Halloween: A Break in the Rain

The forecast brings some good news for Halloween. As the disturbance moves away from the region, drier conditions are expected to settle in across the Borderland.

That should provide a welcome break from the rain for trick-or-treaters and outdoor Halloween activities. While folks should continue to monitor updated forecasts, Saturday is shaping up to be the driest part of the extended forecast.

Sunday: Another Flooding Concern

The next major weather system is expected to arrive Sunday as the Pacific upper-level low moves into the region, bringing another chance for widespread showers and thunderstorms.
