Cathedral, Loretto seniors named Gates Millennium Scholars

More than a dozen El Paso area students are proudly representing the city as Gates Millennium Scholars.

Twelve Cathedral High School seniors and two Loretto Academy students were awarded the scholarship.

Last year, the all-boys school had ten scholars.

The Diocese of El Paso said a pep rally was held Tuesday to honor the young men.

Senior Jose Echeverri said it’s a relief for him and his family to know that college education will be paid for in full.

“Since this scholarship has been given to me , it’s been freeing, in a sense that I don’t really have to worry,” said Echeverri.

According to the Gates Millennium Scholars Program website, 1,000 students were awarded from across the nation.

Each will be awarded a ‘good-through-graduation’ scholarship that can be used to pursue a degree in any undergraduate major at the accredited college or university of his or her choice.
