Feb.15 deadline for Affordable Care Act insurance approaching.

Next week a lot of people might have Valentine’s Day on their minds.

But ABC-7 wants to remind everyone the deadline to enroll for health insurance under the Affordable Care Act is Feb. 15.

Abraham Ponce, a Mexican national, who only speaks Spanish tells ABC-7 when he was thinking about enrolling for health care it scared him.

Having to deal with a lot of documents and information he wasn’t familiar with was a great concern to him. Ponce tells ABC-7 he was worried about dealing with a complicated process.

And that’s exactly where “Get Covered America” steps in.

“We were able to assist more than a hundred families or individuals,” said Monica Gaytan, a representative for “Get Covered America.”

Gaytan tells ABC-7 the staff sits down with those interested in the Affordable Care Act plan and gives them free assistance.

Gaytan said they help answer any questions and also find out how much financial assistance may be available to help people pay for their monthly premiums.

Ponce tells ABC-7 the staff were very knowledgeable. They took their time and were very friendly in assisting him.

But the staff want to remind everyone you can’t be helped unless you bring the right paperwork.

A form of ID is required. It can be a state issued ID, a Social Security card or a passport.

You also need to bring a W-2 form or your last three paycheck stubs and if you have another form of insurance like Medicare or CHIP they ask you bring that paperwork in as well.

Ponce tells ABC-7 this year he was able to enroll in a plan and they had modest prices.

But for those who decide to go without a health care plan there is a penalty.

“This year if they don’t enroll by Feb. 15 next year the penalty will go up to 2% or about $325 per person,” said Gaytan.

With a big smile, Ponce said he feels a weight lifted off of his shoulders knowing he’s now covered.

A few viewers asked ABC-7 how was it possible a Mexican national enrolled in the health care plan.

ABC-7 asked Gaytan and she said any lawfully present immigrants are allowed to enroll.

“Get covered America” will be having two more enrollment events: Sunday, from 1-4 p.m. at Victory Warriors located at 4601 Hondo Pass Dr. ; and Monday, from 2-7 p.m. at El Paso Community College Northwest campus in the library.
