TEA investigating EPISD for ‘potential irregularities’ in attendance reports

The Texas Education Agency has opened an investigation into the El Paso Independent School District.

TEA Commissioner Michael Williams said Monday the agency is investigating what he called “potential irregularities” in the way EPISD reported student attendance. ABC-7 learned the district’s internal auditor found the potential irregularities and reported them to the state agency.

During a news conference, and with superintendent Juan Cabrera by his side, Williams apologized for mistakenly referring to the process as a “cheating” investigation during an earlier interview with the El Paso Times.

He declined to offer more details as the investigation is underway.
