Cathedral High School Swimming History

Cathedral High School is without dispute the most dominant swimming team in TAPPS' history. The Irish have won 25 consecutive state championships and 29 titles overall. The last time Cathedral did not win the state swimming championship was in 1990 when they belonged to the now defunct TCIL. Cathedral's first championship was in 1984 under Coach Clarence Hilton. Current coach, Jack White, was hired in 1986 and the rest is history. The Irish won the championship in 1987, 1988, and 1989. After missing out in 1990, Cathedral resumed its winning ways and has won every swimming championship since. The Irish have won titles in the following years: TCIL titles-Coach Clarence Hilton 1984, Coach Jack White 1987, 1988, 1989, 1991, 1992, 1993, 1994, 1995, 1996, 1997, 1998, 1999, 2000 TAPPS tiles- 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014 and 2015. Cathedral has simply dominated its competition winning most of their championships by outscoring the opposing schools by as many as 200 points. The 2013 Irish swim team scored 334.5 points at the state meet easily out-distancing runner-up Trinity Christian's total of 121 points. The 2014 Cathedral team scored 319 points to runner-up St. Thomas High School's 161 points and easily won the TAPPS 5A State Swimming Championship despite losing several members from the 2013 squad. The 2015 squad scored 346 points easily out distancing runner up Tomball Concordia Lutheran's 122 points. I am indebted to Coach Jack White for the above information since TCIL records are either non existent or very hard to find except in football and basketball. The following is a list of team and individual state championship performances for Cathedral High.

2018 Cathedral Swimming Update

Cathedral High School continued its dominance of TAPPS Division I swimming by winning its 32 nd overall state championship and extended their winning streak to 30 straight TAPPS or TCIL swimming titles. Cathedral swimmers won 3 individual gold medals and 2 relay gold medals racking up 190 points to easily out distance second place finisher St. Thomas' 128 points. Irish swimmers also brought home two silver medals and two bronze medal to add to their over flowing trophy cases. Connor White won two individual gold medals and was part of two gold medal relay teams. Luis Reynoso was the other gold medal winner for Cathedral.

2017 Cathedral Swimming Update

The Cathedral High School swimming program has to be one of the most successful athletic programs in the United States. The record prior to 2017 was 26 straight TAPPS or TCIL state titles and 30 championships in the program's history. Make that 27 straight titles in a row and 31 championships overall after the 2017 state meet. That's right, the Irish have done it again. Captured another TAPPS Division I swimming state championship. Cathedral scored 210 points on their way to their 31st title easily out distancing Trinity Christian Academy's 118 points and Tomball Concordia's 109 points. Cathedral was once again the dominant team at the state meet capturing 6 gold medals, 2 silver medals, and 2 bronze medals.

2016 Update

Cathedral High School won its' 26th straight TAPPS State Swimming Championship and 30th title overall. The Irish were not quite as dominant as they have been in prior years but scored 249.5 points easily out-distancing second place Tomball Concordia's 132 points and third place Plano John Paul's 109 points.

Diego Ramirez was Cathedral's top performer winning an individual gold medal in the 100 yard freestyle and being one of the team members of the gold medal winning 200 yard freestyle relay team and the 400 yard freestyle relay squad. The Irish won a total of 3 gold medals, 2 silver medals, and 5 bronze medals. Team members for the 200 yard freestyle relay team besides Ramirez were Sean Miller, Alec Barbour, and Emmanuel Escarcega. Other relay members for the first place 400 yard freestyle team were Luis Reynoso, Alec Barbour, and Alex Santarriaga. Cathedral also took the silver medal in the 200 yard medley relay. Team members were Luis Reynoso, Sean Miller, Alex Santarriaga, and Emmanuel Escarcega. Alex Santarriaga also took hoe the silver medal in the 100 yard butterfly event. Bronze medalists for the Irish were Diego Ramirez (200 yard freestyle), Alec Barbour (200 yard IM), Connor White in both the 500 yard freestyle and 100 yard backstroke, and Sean Miller (100 yard breast stroke). Cathedral also had several other competitors that picked up valuable point by finishing anywhere from 4th to 10th place. Other team members were Nate Armendariz, Rolando Guillot, Carlos Valtierres, Jorge Ruiz, Michael Rafaeian, Blake Assi, and Xavier Navarro.

2015: Cathedral High School scored 346 points easily out distancing runner up Tomball Concordia Lutheran by 224 points. The Irish were led by Roberto Pinedo, Luis Alvelais, Isai Aguirre, Luis Reynosa, Sean Miller, Alex Santarriaga, Andres Medina, Juan Ramos, Diego Ramirez, and Nate Armendariz. Cathedral swimmers won 3 individual gold medals and also won state titles in all three relay events. Winning gold medals for the Irish were Roberto Pinedo in two events and Juan Ramos. Pinedo set a new state record in the 50 yard freestyle swimming a time of 21:16 seconds and then won his second gold in the 100 yard butterfly. Ramos took the gold in the 100 yard freestyle with a winning time of 48.26 seconds. Cathedral swimmers earned 6 silver medals and 6 bronze medals at the meet. Luis Alvelais tool silver in the 50 yard freestyle; Isai Aguirre won the silver in the 100 yard backstroke; Alex Santarriaga took the silver in the 100 yard butterfly; Sean Miller earned the silver in the 100 yard freestyle; Juan Ramos took the silver in the 200 yard medley; and Diego Ramirez earned the silver in the 500 yard freestyle. Taking bronze medals for the Irish were Luis Reynosa (100 yard back stroke); Sean Miller (100 yard breaststroke); Andres Medina (100 yard butterfly); Luis Alvelais (100 yard freestyle); Diego Ramirez (200 yard freestyle); and Nate Armendariz (500 yard freestyle). Cathedral also won all three relay events. Team members for the relays were as follows: 200 yard freestyle [Fralick Chason, Juan Ramos, Diego Ramirez, and Luis Alvelais] (1:29.62), 200 yard medley [Isai Aguirre, Sean Miller, Roberto Pinedo, and Luis Alvelais] (1:36.89.2), and the 400 yard freestyle [Juan Ramos, Nate Armendariz, Diego Ramirez, and Roberto Pinedo] (3:13.16).

2014: Cathedral High School took 20 swimmers to the state tournament and 18 of those swimmers scored points to lead the Irish to their 28 th TAPPS/TCIL swimming title and the 24 th straight championship since 1991. Cathedral scored 319 points to easily out distance St. Thomas High School and their 161 points. The Irish swimmers won each of the relay events (200 yard medley (1:40.99), 200 yard freestyle (1:31.20), and 400 yard freestyle (3:17.09)) as well as winning three individual swim events. Roberto Pinedo won two individual gold medals for his performances on the 50 yard freestyle (21.70 seconds) and the 100 yard butterfly (51.10 seconds). Juan Ramos won a gold medal in the 100 yard freestyle (48.81 seconds) while Diego Ramirez and isai Aguirre brought home silver medals for 500 yard freestyle and the 100 yard backstroke, respectively. Members of the 200 yard medley relay team were Luis Aguirre, Sean Miller, Roberto Pinedo, and Luis Alvelais. Relay members for the 200 yard freestyle were Luis Alvelais, Chason Fralick, Luis Aguirre, and Juan Ramos. Members of the 400 yard freestyle relay squad were Juan Ramos, Diego Ramirez, Roberto Pinedo, and Nate Armendariz. The Irish had four swimmers place in the top 5 of the 200 yard freestyle event. Diego Ramirez finished 2 nd (1:44.36); Nate Armendariz placed 3 rd (1:50.65); Sean Yanez finished 4 th (1:52.60); and Alex Santarriaga placed 5 th (1:53.09). Cathedral didn't win the 200 yard individual medley but Juan Ramos finished 3 rd (2:01.12); Emmanuel Escarcega took 6 th (2:07.36); Alex Quezada finished 7 th (2:08.81); and Isai Aguirre placed 9 th (2:09.50). Cathedral placed three other swimmers in the 50 yard freestyle in addition to Roberto Pinedo's winning performance. Luis Alvelais finished 3 rd (22.55); Chason Fralick 7 th (23.14); and Luis Aguirre 9 th (23.43). Luis Aguirre 3 rd (55.55); Alex Santarriaga 4 th (56.17); and Emmanuel Escarcega 6 th (57.79) joined Roberto Pinedo's winning performance in the 100 yard butterfly. Juan Ramos won the 100 yard freestyle while Luis Alvelais (3 rd ); Sean Miller (4 th ); and Chason Fralick (5 th ) also scored points in the event. Cathedral had four swimmers score points in the 500 yard freestyle. Diego Ramirez placed second (4:50.47); Nate Armendariz finished 3 rd (4:59.06); Sean Yanez took 6 th place (5:14.70); and Rogelio Prieto finished in 7 th place (5:16.50). The Irish also got points from multiple swimmers in the 100 yard backstroke and the 100 yard breaststroke. Isai Aguirre finished 2 nd in the 100 yard backstroke with a time of 56.77. Joining him in scoring points in the event were Andres Medina 5 th (57.66) and Jesse Ramirez 9 th (1:01.14). Sean Miller finished 5 th in the 100 yard breaststroke. He was joined by Carlos Valtierres (8 th ), Alec Barbour (9 th ), and Jose Echeverri (11 th ) in scoring points for the event.

2013: Cathedral High School scored 334.5 points and won the TAPPS' State Swimming Championship completely dominating its competition. The runner up was Trinity Christian with 121 points. Ricky De Jesus was named Swimmer of the Meet and Cathedral finished the year with an 8 th place national ranking. Cathedral had 20 team members that qualified for the state meet and all contributed to the Irish state championship. De Jesus had gold medal performances in the 50 yard freestyle (21.28 seconds) and the 100 yard backstroke (53.25 seconds). He also was a member of two relay teams that won state championships. De Jesus was a member of the 200 yard medley relay team (De Jesus, Emilio Cavazos, Adrian Saucedo, and Alex Aguirre) that won the state title with a time of 1:37.63 (state record) and also a member of the Irish 200 yard freestyle state champion relay team (De Jesus, Alex Aguirre, Roberto Pinedo, and Adrian Saucedo) that had a winning time of 1:27.34 (state record). Cathedral High School often placed several team members in each event at the swimming meet. Alex Aguirre finished 2 nd in the 200 yard freestyle (1:45.66) while team mates Roberto Pinedo finished 3 rd (1:46.77), Nathaniel Armendariz finished 4 th (1:52.64) and Sean Yanez finished 5 th (1:55.57). Juan Ramos had a 2 nd place finish in the 200 yard individual medley (2:00.36) while Luis Aguirre and Isai Aguirre placed 7 th (2:01.61) and 9 th (2:11.36), respectively. Adrian Saucedo won a silver medal for his 2 nd place finish in the 50 yard freestyle (22.01) with Emilio Cavazos finishing 5 th (23.24) and Fralick Chacon placing 7 th (23.86) in the same event. Roberto Pinedo won the state championship for his performance in the 100 yard butterfly (51.46). Diego Ramirez (56.37), Luis Aguirre (56.45), and Alex Santaniga (56.98) finished in 3 rd , 4 th , and 7 th place respectively. Alex Aguirre won the 100 yard freestyle with a time of 48.02 seconds. Cathedral placed three swimmers in the top five finishers of the 500 yard freestyle. Juan Ramos was 2 nd (4:52.45), Diego Ramirez finished 3 rd (4:55.72) and Sean Yanez placed 5 th (5:08.63). Isai Aguirre (4 th 58.83) and Jesse Ramirez (6 th 1:00.51) both scored points in the 100 theryard backstroke. Adrian Saucedo won the gold medal in the 100 yard breaststroke (59.09) while team-mates Sean Miller finished in 6 th place (1:04.6) and Carlos Valtierres placed 7 th (1:05.11) in the same event. Cathedral's 400 yard freestyle relay team (Juan Ramos, Luis Aguirre, Emilio Cavazos, and Roberto Pinedo) put a perfect ending on the tournament by winning the state championship with a time of 3:19.95.

2012: Cathedral High School dominated the TAPPS' State Swimming Tournament amassing 343 points and easily out distanced the 101 points scored by second place Addison Trinity Christian. The Irish won 7 gold medals or state championships (4 individual and 3 relay) and also finished 2 nd in four events. Cathedral had multiple competitors in 8 different swimming events and scored points in each. Jose Rick De Jesus won two individual state championships at the meet-the first in the 50 yard freestyle (21.71) and the second in the 100 yard backstroke (52.04 seconds). Roberto Pinedo won an individual state championship in the 100 yard butterfly (53.24 seconds) as did Alejandro Aguirre in the 100 yard freestyle (47.21 seconds). Irish relay teams that won gold medals were 200 yard medley in 1:33.73 (Jose Ricky De Jesus, Adrian Saucedo, Alejandro Aguirre, and Alejandro Cuaron); 200 yard freestyle in 1:30.88 (Alejandro Cuaron, Adrian Saucedo, Emilio Cavazos, and Andres Esquivel); and 400 yard freestyle in 3:15.68 (Roberto Pinedo, Andres Esquivel, Jose Ricky De Jesus, and Alejandro Aguirre). The second place finishers for Cathedral were Alejandro Aguirre in the 200 yard freestyle (1:44.30); Alejandro Cuaron in the 200 yard individual medley (2:03.14); Juan Ramos in the 500 yard freestyle (4:51.69); and Alejandro Cuaron in the 100 yard backstoke (57.45 seconds). Third place finishers included Adrian Saucedo in the 100 yard breaststroke (1:02.89); Salvador Velez in the 500 yard freestyle (5:07.95); Andres Esquivel in the 100 yard freestyle (51.18 seconds); Emilio Cavazos in the 50 yard freestyle (23.03 seconds); and Adrian Saucedo in the 200 yard individual medley (2:03.39) . 2011: Cathedral High School scored 185 points to win the TAPPS' State Swimming and Diving Championship. Fort Worth Nolan Catholic High School finished second with 67 points. The Irish won 8 state championships (5 individual and 3 relay), finished second in two other events, and third in three others. Cathedral placed multiple competitors in most of the individual swimming events and scored combined points in those events. Individual gold medalists included Jose Ricky De Jesus in the 200 yard individual medley (1:56.97) and also in the 100 yard backstroke (53.09 seconds); Leo Scott in the 50 yard freestyle (21.93 seconds) and again in the 100 yard butterfly (51.33 seconds); and Javi Ochoa in the 100 yard breaststroke (1:01.17). Irish relay teams that finished in first place were 200 yard medley in 1:38.68 (Jose Ricky De Jesus, Javi Ochoa, Leo Scott, and Andres Esquivel); 200 yard freestyle in 1:29.04 (Jose Ricky De Jesus, Christian Miller, Alex Aguirre, and Leo Scott); and 400 yard freestyle relay in a time of 3:21.48 (Alex Cuaron, Christian Miller, Alex Aguirre, and Javi Ochoa). Cathedral swimmers with silver medals included Alex Aguirre in the 100 yard freestyle (48.89 seconds); and Alex Cuaron in the 200 yard individual medley (2:03.05). Third place or bronze medalists included Alex Aguirre in the 200 yard freestyle (1:46.76); Alex Cuaron in the 100 yard backstroke (56.22 seconds); and Luis Aguirre in the 100 yard breaststroke (1:06.51). Other Irish swimmers that contributed points were Sal Velez (6 th place), Sean Yanez (7 th place), and Christian Miller (5 th place) all in the 200 yard freestyle; Luis Aguirre (5 th place) and Michael Garcia (9 th place) both in the 200 yard individual medley; Andrew Esquivel (5 th place) and Emilio Cavazos (11 th place) both in the 50 yard freestyle; Kevin Rincon (5 th ), Jaron Fralick (7 th ), and Oscar Carranza (9 th ) all in the 100 yard butterfly; Christian Miller (4 th ), Andres Esquivel (5th), and Emilio Cavazos (6 th ) all in the 100 yard freestyle; Michael Garcia (6 th ) and Andres Escobar (11 th ) both in the 100 yard backstroke; and Fabrizio Yepo (9 th ) and Joquin Montes (12th) both in the 100 yard breaststroke.

2010: Cathedral High School scored 132 points to capture the TAPPS' State Swimming and Diving Championship. The Irish swimmers won a total of 5 gold medals (4 individual and 1 relay), 4 silver medals, and 2 bronze medals on their way to winning the title. Cathedral, once again, had multiple competitors in multiple events to contribute points towards their victory. First place finishers included Leo Scott in the 200 yard individual medley (1:58.22) and again in the 100 yard butterfly (51.78 seconds); Jorge Escarcega in the 100 yard backstroke (53.09 seconds); and Dustin Luse in the 100 yard breaststroke (1:01.27). The Irish 400 yard freestyle relay team captured the gold medal with a winning time of 3:17.51 (Alex Aguirre, Ozman Ochoa, Leo Scott, and Jorge Escarcega). Silver medalists included Ozman Ochoa in the 100 yard breaststroke (1:01.74); the 200 yard freestyle relay team with a time of 1:31.03 (Alex Aguirre, Jose Ricky De Jesus, Alex Cuaron and Dustin Luse); Ozman Ochoa in the 500 yard free style (4:47.03); and Jorge Escarcega in the 50 yard free style. Bronze medalists included Jose Ricky De Jesus in the 200 yard individual medley (2:01.55) and again in the 100 yard backstroke (55.1 seconds). Other Cathedral swimmers that contributed points towards their state title included Alex Miller in the 100 yard breaststroke (8 th ); Ricardo Ramos in the 100 yard backstroke (7 th ); Sal Velez (5 th ), Jaron Fralick (6 th ), and Mauricio Maese (7 th ) all in the 500 yard freestyle; Alex Aguirre (5 th ) and Alex Cuaron (7 th ) both in the 100 yard freestyle; Dusti Luse (6 th ) in the 50 yard freestyle; and Alex Aguirre (4 th ); Alex Cuaron (6 th ); and Alex Miller (7 th ) all in the 200 yard freestyle.

2009: Cathedral High School scored 140 points to win The TAPPS' State Swimming and Diving Championship. The Irish swimmers won a total of 8 state championships (5 individual and 3 relays), finished second once, and third two times. Individual gold medal winners included Leo Scott in the 200 yard individual medley with a winning time of 1:59.06; Leo Scott, once again in the 100 yard butterfly in 52.17 seconds; Javier Ochoa in the 500 yard freestyle in 4:57.54; Dustin Luse in the 100 yard breaststroke in 1:01.27; and Jorge Escarcega in the 100 yard breaststroke with a winning time of 54.21 seconds. Championship relay teams included the 200 yard medley (Ricardo Ramos, Dustin Luse, Leo Scott, Javier Ochoa) in a winning time of 1:43.27; 200 yard freestyle (Jorge Escarcega, David Murguia, Christian Engelbaum, and Dustin Luse) in 1:30.93; and 400 yard freestyle (Jorge Escarcega, Javier Ochoa, Christian Engelbaum, and Leo Scott) with a winning time of 3:20.98. Jorge Escarcega added a silver medal to his three gold medals by finishing 2 nd in the 100 yard freestyle (48.68 seconds). Christian Engelbaum added a bronze medal to his 2 gold medals with a third place finish in the 200 yard freestyle (1:50.62) as did Javier Ochoa with a third place finish in the 200 yard individual medley (2:04.11). Other contributors to the Irish state championship were Felix Raziel 100 yard breaststroke (7 th ); Michael Garcia 100 backstroke (8 th ); Alex Cuaron (5 th ) and Sal Velez in the 500 yard freestyle; Christian Engelbaum 100 yard freestyle (5 th ); Dustin Luse 100 yard butterfly; and Alex Cuaron 200 yard freestyle (8 th ).

2008: The Irish scored 185 points and easily defeated runner up Dallas Bishop Lynch and their 83 points to capture the TAPPS' State Swimming and Diving Championship. Cathedral swimmers won 10 gold medals (7 individual and 3 relays), 4 silver medals, and 4 bronze medals during the meet. Individual state champions were Patrick Gailey in the 200 yard freestyle with a winning time of 1:48.67 and the 100 yard freestyle with a time of 48.29 seconds; J.D. Scott in the 200 yard individual medley with a time of 2:04.23 and also in the 100 yard breaststroke with a time of 1:01.13; Leo Scott in the 500 yard freestyle with a time of 4:56.14 and the 100 yard butterfly with a time of 53.83 seconds; and Jesus Herrera in the 100 yard backstroke with a time of 57.04 seconds. Relay state championships were won in the 200 yard medley relay (Jorge Escarcega, Leo Scott, J.D. Scott, and Dustin Luse) with a winning time of 1:42.18; the 200 yard freestyle relay (J.D. Scott, Dustin Luse, Jorge Escarcega, and Patrick Gailey) with a winning time of 1:31.75; and the 400 yard freestyle relay (Patrick Gailey, Christian Engelbaum, Jesus Herrera, and Leo Scott) with a winning time of 3:23.66. 2007: Cathedral High School scored 226 points compared to the 111 points Stallied by Dallas Bishop Lynch to win the TAPPS' State Swimming and Diving Championship. Irish swimmers won 9 gold medals (6 individual and 3 relay), 4 silver medals, and 7 bronze medals to win the meet. Individual gold medalists were Patrick Gailey in the 200 yard freestyle with a winning time of 1:48.46; Carlos Escarcega in the 50 yard freestyle with a winning time of 21.98 seconds and also in the 100 yard freestyle with a winning time of 48.54 seconds; Bryan Jones in the 500 yard freestyle with a winning time of 4:59.91; Jorge Escarcega in the 100 yard backstroke with a winning time of 55.9 seconds; Jose De Jesus in the 100 yard breaststroke with a winning time of 1:00.70. State champion relay teams were the 200 yard medley relay (Jorge Escarcega, Jose De Jesus, Mathew Engelbaum, and John Bieganowski) in a winning time of 1:40.97; the 200 yard freestyle relay (Jose De Jesus, Dustin Luse, John Bieganowski, and Carlos Escarcega) with a winning time and meet record of 1:30.25; and the 400 yard freestyle relay (Edgar Hernandez, Patrick Gailey, Mathew Engelbaum, and Carlos Escarcega) with a winning time of 3:19.80. Cathedral swimmers that won silver medals were Edgar Hernandez in the 500 yard freestyle (5:00.47); Jorge Escarcega in the 100 yard butterfly (55.19 seconds); Jose De Jesus in the 200 yard individual medley (2:04.89); and Edgar Hernandez in the 200 yard freestyle (1:50.61). Bronze medalists were Alex Diaz in the 200 yard freestyle (1:51.36); Jesus Herrera in the 200 yard individual medley (2:05.75); Josh Bieganowski in the 50 yard freestyle (22.98 seconds); Mathew Engelbaum in the 100 yard butterfly (55.74 seconds); Alex Diaz in the 500 yard freestyle (5:00.79); Jesus Herrera in the 100 yard backstroke (58.06 seconds); and Dustin Luse in the 100 yard breaststroke (1:02.19). 2006: Cathedral High School defeated Central Catholic High School 222-62 points to win the TAPPS' State Swimming and Diving Championship. The Irish dominated the swim meet winning 10 gold medals (7 individual and 3 relay), 6 silver medals, and 5 bronze medals. Individual state championships were won by Patrick Gailey in the 200 yard freestyle (1:51.43); John Azar in the 200 yard individual medley (1:54.36) and also in the 100 yard breaststroke (58.11 seconds meet record); Carlos Escarcega in the 50 yard freestyle (22.4 seconds) and also the 100 yard freestyle (49.2 seconds); Edgar Hernandez in the 500 yard freestyle (5:02.37); and Alberto Venegas in the 100 yard backstroke (57.35 seconds). Cathedral relay teams that won the gold medal were the 200 yard medley (Alberto Venegas, John Azar, Jorge Diaz, and Carlos Escarcega) with a winning time of 1:43.08; the 200 yard freestyle (John Azar, Vince Gallegos, Josh Bieganowski, and Carlos Escarcega) with a winning and meet record time of 1:29.53; and the 400 yard freestyle (Edgar Hernandez, Alberto Venegas, Richard Anez, and Vince Gallegos) with a winning time of 3:25.62. 2005: Cathedral High School racked up 218 points and easily defeated runner up Dallas Bishop Lynch's toatal of 66 points to win the TAPPS" State Swimming and Diving Championship. The Irish swimmers won 9 gold medals (6 individual and 3 relays), 5 silver medals, and 5 bronze medals. Cathedral place multiple competitors in many events accounting for many of the team's points. Winners of individual state championships were Raul Saenz in the 200 yard freestyle (1:49.42); John Azar in the 50 yard freestyle (22.67 seconds); Sergio Ruiz in the 100 yard butterfly (53.33 seconds); Edgar Hernandez in the 500 yard freestyle (4:55.67); Sergio Ruiz in the 100 yard backstroke (55.28 seconds); and John Azar in the 100 yard breaststroke (59.53 seconds). Gold medal relay teams included the 400 yard freestyle (John Azar, Albert Venegas, Edgar Hernandez, and Raul Saenz) with a winning time of 3:21.18; the 200 yard freestyle (John Azar, Carlos Escarcega, Raul Saenz, and Sergio Ruiz) with a winning time of 1:30.70; and the 200 yard medley (Albert Venegas, Jorge Diaz, Sergio Ruiz, and Carlos Escarcega ) with a winning time of 1:42.70. Cathedral swimmers that won silver medals were Edgar Hernandez in the 200 yard freestyle (1:50.25); Jorge Diaz in the 200 yard individual medley (2:05.24); Carlos Escarcega in the 50 yard freestyle (22.88 seconds); Albert Venegas in the 100 yard freestyle (50.54 seconds) and also in the 100 yard backstroke (58.27 seconds). Bronze medalists included Jorge Diaz in the 100 yard breaststroke (1:04.10); Mathew Engelbaum in the 100 yard breaststroke (1:00.10); Carlos Escarcega in the 100 yard freestyle (50.59 seconds); Raul Saenz in the 100 yard butterfly (56.41 seconds); and Jesus Herrera in the 200 yard individual medley (2:06.82). 2004: Cathedral High School won the TAPPS' State Swiiming and Diving Championship outscoring runner up Dallas Bishop Lynch 191 to 72 points. The Irish won 9 gold medals (6 individual and 3 relay), 3 silver medals, and 4 bronze medals. Individuals that won state championships were Raul Saenz in the 200 yard freestyle (1:51.15) and also the 500 yard freestyle (5:00.50); Sergio Ruiz in the 200 yard individual medley; John Azar in the 50 yard freestyle (22.7 seconds) and also in the 100 yard breaststroke (1:01..67); and Albert Venegas in the 100 yard freestyle (51.57 seconds). Irish first play relay teams included the 200 yard medley (Sergio Ruiz, John Azar, Michael Villegas, and Hector Murguia) in a winning time of 1:42.92; the 200 yard freestyle (Michael Villegas, Hector Murguia, Albert Venegas, and John Azar) in a winning time of 1:32.64; and the 400 yard freestyle (Albert Venegas, Raul Saenz, Edgar Hernandez, and Sergio Ruiz) in a winning time of 3:26.60. Silver medalists for Cathedral were Hector Murguia in the 100 yard freestyle (52.06 seconds); Michael Villegas in the 100 yard butterfly (57.56 seconds); and Sergio Ruiz in the 100 yard backstroke (54.54 seconds). Bronze medalists included Albert Venegas in the 100 yard backstroke (59.17 seconds); Edgar Hernandez in the 500 yard freestyle (5:12.08); Octavio Diaz in the 200 yard individual medley (2:10.37); and Michael Villegas in the 200 yard freestyle (1:53.68). 2003: Cathedral High School won the TAPPS' State Swimming and Diving Championship easily out pointing runner up Brownsville St. Joseph Academy by a score of 222-81 points. The Irish won 7 gold medals (4 individual and 3 relay), 8 silver medals, and 5 bronze medals. Individual state champions were Hugo Santarriaga in the 200 yard freestyle (1:44.92) and in the 100 yard freestyle (48.54 seconds); Sergio Ruiz in the 200 yard individual medley (1:59.22); and Raul Saenz in the 500 yard freestyle (4:57.60). Relay state champions were the 200 yard medley (Sergio Ruiz, Hugo Santarriaga, John Azar, and Alex Yee) with a time of 1:42.24; the 200 yard freestyle (Lucas Lautman, Michael Yancey, Alex Yee, and Hugo Santarriaga) in a time of 1:30.60; and the 400 yard freestyle (Lucas Lautman, Michael Yancey, Sergio Ruiz, and Rogelio Dominguez) in a time of 3:22.13. Irish swimmers that took home silver medals were John Azar in the 100 yard breaststroke (1:03.20); Sergio Ruiz in the 100 yard backstroke (54.20 seconds); Rogelio Dominguez in the 500 yard freestyle (4:59.61); Michael Yancey in the 100 yard freestyle; Lucas Lautman in the 100 yard butterfly (54.58 seconds); Alex Yee in the 50 yard freestyle (22.96 seconds); John Azar in the 200 yard individual medley (2:05.08); and Lucas Lautman in the 200 yard freestyle (1:49.20). Bronze medal winners were Michael Yancey in the 200 yard freestyle (1:50.44); Fernando Hernandez in the 200 yard individual medley (2:08); Michael Villegas in the 50 yard freestyle (23.54 seconds); Alex Yee in the 100 yard freestyle (50.62) seconds; and Albert Venegas in the 100 yard backstroke (56.99 seconds). 2002: TAPPS' records were not complete for this season but this much was recorded: Cathedral High School won 9 gold medals (6 individual and 3 relay) in route to winning the TAPPS' State Swimming and Diving Championship for the 2001-2002 season. Winners of individual state championships were Hugo Santariagga in the 200 yard freestyle (1:46. 23) and also in the 50 yard freestyle (54.46 seconds); Sergio Ruiz in the 200 yard individual medley and also in the 100 yard backstroke (53.71 seconds) ; Rogelio Dominguez in the 500 yard freestyle (4:55.29); and Lucas Lautman in the 100 yard freestyle (49.38 seconds). Relay team that won state championships were the 200 yard medley (team members not listed in TAPPS records) in 1:44.55; the 200 yard freestyle (team members not listed) in 1:32.22; and the 400 yard freestyle (team members not listed) in 3:22.89. Silver medal winners were Damien Maruffo in the 100 yard backstroke (58.04 seconds); Alex Yee in the 100 yard freestyle (51.4 seconds); and Raul Saenz in the 100 yard butterfly (57.59 seconds). Bronze medalists included Lucas Lautman in the 200 yard freestyle (1:49.79); Rogelio Dominguez in the 200 yard individual medley (2:04.35); and Michael Yancey in the 500 yard freestyle (5:05.60).

2001: Cathedral High School outpointed runner up St. Thomas Houston by a score of 218-76 points to win the TAPPS' State Swimming and Diving Championship. The Irish won 9 gold medals (6 individual and 3 relay), 2 silver medals and 6 bronze medals. Winners of individual state championships were Andy Donovan in the 200 yard freestyle (1:46.14); Jake Norton in the 50 yard freestyle (21.50 seconds); Tom Dean in the 100 yard butterfly (53.89 seconds); Jake Norton in the 100 yard freestyle (47.04 seconds); Calvin Zielsdorf in the100 yard backstroke (51.27 seconds meet record); and Tom Dean in the 100 yard breaststroke (1:01.42 meet record). State champion relay teams were 400 yard freestyle (Josh Estevan, Andy Donovan, Calvin Zielsdorf, and Jake Norton) in a winning and meet record time of 3:12.72; the 200 yard freestyle (Josh Estevan, Hugo Santarriaga, Tom Dean, and Andy Donovan) in a winning a meet record time of 1:32.33; and the 200 yard medley (Calvin Zielsdorf, Jake Norton, Tom Dean, and Hugo Santarriaga) in a winning time of 1:38.39. Silver medalists included Josh Estevan in the 100 yard freestyle (49.53 seconds); and Andy Donovan in the 500 yard freestyle (4:44.55 meet record). Bronze medalists were Jonas Hein in the 100 yard breaststroke (1:05.48); Damien Maruffo in the 100 yard backstroke (1:00.04); Ira Walker in the 500 yard freestyle (4:53.29 meet record); Brad Tremper in 1 meter diving; Josh Estevan in the 50 yard freestyle (22.46 seconds); and Ira Walker in the 200 yard freestyle (1:48.18). Other Cathedral swimmers and divers that contributed to the state championship were Hugo Santarriaga and Michael Yancey in the 200 yard freestyle; Ruben Dominguez, Lucas Lautman, and Jorge Garces all in the 200 yard individual medley; James Knox, Daniel Brown, and John Brown all in 1 meter diving; Lucas Lautman, Gabriel Hernandez, and E. Ortega all in the 100 yard butterfly; Hugo Santarriaga and Alex Yee in the 100 yard freestyle; Rogelio Domingues and Jonas Hein in the 500 yard freestyle; Jorge Garces in the 100 yard backstroke; and Ryan Kelly and Justin Smith in the 100 yard breaststroke.

Any records before 2001 are not available as Cathedral High School was a member of the TCIL. The Irish did win state championships in 1984, 1987,1988, 1989, and 1991-2000.
