Lighting strikes a family’s home in Las Cruces

of las cruces has people talking tonight. “it makes me want to strive t look forward to things in life and there’s more to life than what happened on that football field.” 13-year-old hunter keffer back in december telling us about his recovery. hunter was one of five pacho middle school football players and a coach injured last summer when lightning hit their practice field. thankfully they’re o-k. tonight, it’s another family thankful to be alive. mom, dad and two kids had to run out of their house! it happened last tuesday on kalahari street near the bataan memorial highway. abc-7’s jamie warren spent the day at the home. she is live with a story from our new mexico mobile newsroom the homeowner told me today he doesn’t know why lightning struck his house. he’s just happy his wife and two kids are ok. it started with a bang. “it was the biggest bang i’ve ever heard.” jorg vazquez was in the kitchen with wife his and two kids tuesday evening when lightning struck their house. “we gathered our shoes and we ran out of the house i told my wife to take the kids to the neighbors.” fire started in the attic above the garage. crews were able to put out the flames but the damage was unavoidable. “everything is pretty muc ruined.” now the family is packing up the rest of their belongings. no one was hurt but vazquez says the family is still shaken up. “my three year old is the one that’s most shook up he doesn’t want to come in the house and he’s kind of having nightmares at night.” vazquez hopes others learn from his experience. “i don’t know why it chose my house but i think there’s some lessons to be learned from it just being prepared, having your documents in order having insurance it’s pretty important.” the family has been staying in a hotel and will move into a rental home until the damage is fixed. vazquez says they’ve been receiving extra clothes and household items from family members. the family hopes to move back home within the next six months. breaking news out
