Preventing drunk driving

Authorities in El Paso and Las Cruces will be out in force all weekend. They’ll be checking for drunk drivers.

El Paso police say 28 people were killed on El Paso roads this year, six more than this time last year. At least half of those deaths could have been prevented, because a reported drunk driver was to blame.

“We take extra precaution making sure that they have fun and that they drink responsibly” said Nicolas Nassri, general manager of Ojos Locos.

Unfortunately, not everyone is responsible after having a good time. El Paso police report 14 alcohol related deaths in the city since Jan. 1.

Police say seven of those were the drunk drivers, and the other seven were the victims of DWI. This holiday weekend, restaurant and bar owners are looking to keep those numbers from rising.

“You know what? If you need a ride home, get the manager. It is on us – Be safe. Have a wonderful Fourth of July. Happy, party but party responsible” Nassri said.

Ojos Locos on Airway is also using posters and coasters to get the message out. The rest – is up to you.

“Whenever we do go out we have someone drive that isn’t drinking and if he does drink he just has one beer and that is it” said Danny Hernandez, of El Paso.

Johnny Villalovas, who was at the bar with Hernandez, added.

“On holidays, we usually stay home and grill out.-” said Johnny Villanovas who was at the bar with Hernandez. “Keep it safe. No plans to go out.”

“Stay off the roads if you have to-” said Eric Hernandez, “Aside from that drive defensively, and be aware of the guys out there that are driving drunk.”
