Friday storms left residents and city crews cleaning up

Friday evening’s storms had some people running for cover. Roads were flooded and the swift waters caused some damage.

In the Northeast people were seeking cover from the heavy rains and hail. One truck ended up stuck in a canal after strong currents swept it away. The driver managed to make it out safely. By Saturday, the canal was cleared out.

In the Central area, an El Paso Water Utilities pond was put to the test. Crews were working on it Saturday evening. The water was being pumped out and at first glance the pond might look like it received structural damage from the rains but officials from El Paso Water Utilities say it’s part of ongoing construction. The pond served its purpose preventing rainwater from flooding the nearby roadways. However, the construction vehicles in the pond weren’t so lucky as they sank in the deep waters.

One of the worst hit areas was the Northwest.

“We came in and we were all devastated,” resident Elsa Inmans told ABC-7.

Waters from a nearby arroyo spilled over into Inmans home.

“The bottom floor is gone. We had to have a contractor come and pull out the carpet at midnight last night,” Inmans said.

When ABC-7 asked her about the cost of the damage, “I can’t even put a dollar to it,” she said.

Scott Inmans told ABC-7 the extent of the damage.

“The sheet rock.. some of it’s going to have to be removed on the whole first floor,” he said.

Their backyard was left in shambles.

“We still have a foot of ice in the backyard and the mud and boulders from the walls that came down onto our yard,” said Scott Inmans

A thunderstorm that swept through in one evening left a mess that residents say
will take a while to clean up.

El Paso Water Utilities told ABC-7 the Gateway pond project will be complete by the fall but it will be fully functional the end of this month.
