City Wants to Give Anti-Wage Ordinance More Teeth

adding a bigger “bite” into the recentl approved wage theft ordinance abc-7’s andrew j. polk was at today’s meeting. andrew? rick and estela, for some city reps, the first part of the ordinance that passed last month was just a good start… and they’ll be looking to beef up the penalties included. the list of what city-issued permits and licenses that could be included are: licenses for food and food handling businesses, laundries, secondhand goods stores… vendors and solicitors, flea markets contractor and licensing registration. these are the categories drawn up after weeks of review by city staff and legal counsel. but while some city reps like lily limon have been vocal supporters of adding in these harsher penalties… others have lingering questions and safety concerns that will have to be answered before they will sign off. “i have some issues with tellin someone i’m not going to give you a permit to fix your faulty wiring, when there’s a safety issue involved in something like that. so i really have concerns on whether or not we can really do that. but if legal says there are permits out there we can defend, then i think they’re going to bring those to us. and whether or not i think that’s an ethical thing to do or not, that’s the discussion.” as the proposed expansions stand now, an employer in the wage theft database could be excluded from the license and permit penalties… if they can prove they have paid in full the money owed, as set by a court. rick and estela?
