Is Trump interested in buying El Paso Saddleblanket property?
The El Paso Saddleblanket Company is set to close next week and some may not believe who may be looking at the property.
The owners tell ABC-7 that Donald Trump is interested in buying the four-acre property near Cielo Vista mall.
Sort of.
ABC-7 asked if there was any truth to the talk.
“Uh, yeah, real preliminary,” said Luc Henson Wells, president of El Paso Saddleblanket. “Of course the building is for sale. It’s been for sale for about 45 days now.”
Henson claims “Trump’s people” have contacted owner Dusty Henson via email about the $4.9 million property.
“He likes to go big and he’s obviously a savvy real estate guy,” Henson said. “So I think he saw the value in it right away.”
A decade ago the building on I-10 was the old Freeway Lanes before Saddleblanket moved in in 2005 from its longtime Downtown location. So what’s next? A campaign headquarters for Trump or possibly a Trump Tower?”
“I wish the best for dusty, as for Mr. Trump, ehhhh,” said Rick Melendrez, former chairman of the El Paso Democratic party. “I would rather see pinatas of Donald Trump on Alameda, than see Mr. Trump walking the streets of our city.”
“It would be better off in different hands than Trump’s,” said El Pasoan Morayma Lugo. “I don’t think we’d like him here close to the border.”
“It’s nice to dream,” added Gallup, N.M., native Nashad Khalaf, “but his dream is not going to come true here in the Southwest.”
“Whether its a big restaurant chain that moves in here or Donald Trump, it has nothing to do with the politics of it,” Henson said. “We’re just kind of in the middle with a business deal. So I understand the reactions some people have, but for us its a property and its business.”
Henson added that there are no negotiations going on with Trump at this point, but he does believe his interest should be taken seriously.
Trump is set to visit Laredo, Texas, on Thursday.
