Miner Mack Leftwich to miss time due to severe concussion

Utep Miner Head Coach Sean Kugler addressed the media Monday and said Mack Leftwich suffered a severe concussion against NMSU.

The hit came late in the third quarter, and Kugler said Leftwich was knocked out before he even hit the ground. Ryan Metz filled in as the backup quarterback for the rest of the game, but that is not all the playing time he will see.

In fact, Kugler said Metz will get his first start Saturday against Incarnate Word.

“Ryan Metz will be our starter,” Kugler said. “Mack is probably going to be out for an extended period of time. He took a vicious shot. He had a severe concussion.”

The Miners are also excited about playing in front of their home crowd for their first time this season.

“We love our fans,” Kugler said. “We can’t wait to have them come out this week in the Sun Bowl, pack the Sun Bowl and give us the energy we need. We’re going to need the fans. ”
