Mega dog adoption event celebrates Howl-o-ween

At Veterans Park in northeast El Paso this Halloween, Petco and Vetco came together with Animal Services and local shelters like Dames for Dogs to host a mega-adoption event, dubbed Howl-o-ween.

“Our goal is to adopt out over 50 dogs,” said Aimee Stormann, Vetco district manager. “We have pretty close to a hundred here. And just to raise awareness to all the shelters that need some help, that there are purebreds in the shelters.”

It’s a lofty goal for the event, also having raffles and pet-packages giveaways to get out those willing to adopt. And it drew people like Maggie and David Belgie, looking for a companion for their bigger dog.

“Well, the fact that it’s five minutes away from our home,” David Belgie said, “we didn’t have to go across town to get to something like this – doesn’t happen very often.”

They decided to adopt eight-week-old Oreo, another adorable puppy headed to their forever home.

“It’s great,” Maggie Belgie said. “I think it’s good about getting people out to adopt the dogs, and educating people about responsible pet ownership.”

In total, 64 dogs were adopted from the event.
