New Mexico emergency crews spend the day clearing crashes, saving stranded drivers

Drivers in Southern New Mexico faced fair driving conditions Sunday afternoon after a winter storm pummeled the state.

Interstate 10 was icy and wet, but open and there were no major problems along the highway.

New Mexico State Police Sgt. Elizabeth Armijo told ABC-7 the Anthony Gap, NM 404, had reopened after being closed most of the day. A Tweet from emergency management officials said the road opened before 3 p.m.

In Las Cruces, police officers spent the day responding to dozens of weather-related crashes.

Las Cruces Police told ABC-7 they responded to 47 crashes and helped 31 stranded drivers over the last 24 hours. No major injuries were reported.

Emergency crews still recommend drivers stay off the roads, especially as night falls and the wet snow turns into black ice on the roads.
