Burges High school STEM program

Every year Workforce Solutions Borderplex supports STEM initiatives for young students through the STEM and Art Fiesta. The purpose is to increase awareness of educational and career opportunities in science, technology, engineering and mathematics fields. Armando Ochoa teaches architectural and mechanical engineering design class at Burges High School.

“We use hands on experience. They get to design they get creative, use their imagination. It’s preparing our young minds that there is a future out there in these courses,” Ochoa said. He said students are learning the importance of math, science, English and even history.

Tyler Grijalva is a senior at Burges high school. “We work on projects and we have class assignments. In addition, we get to see people who are successful in this field. When we are in class and we’re doing different assignments, or we go out of town for a competition it really opens your eyes and expands your horizons,”” Grijalva said. Ochoa explained engineering isn’t just about having a cellphone or a computer. The stem program goes beyond that.

Emmanuel Ramirez who is also part of the STEM program agrees that exploring many different levels of education is exciting. “It’s really refreshing to not just be focusing on math all the time.” Ramirez said.

Ochoa said STEM education should start in elementary students not just middle and high school students. “It’s very important for our young minds to know, they have a future,” Ochoa said. He says with the upcoming STEM and Arts Fiesta students interact with one another and exchange new ideas.
