Black History Month Activities 2016
Black History Month at UTEP — The African-American Studies program, in conjunction with other UTEP departments, presents a variety of events throughout campus in February in recognition of African American History. Most events are free. Information: African American Studies Program, 747-8650.
• John Siqueiros presents “The Death of Jimi Hendrix: Peace, Love and Murder” at 1 p.m. Monday, Feb. 22, in UTEP Library’s Blumberg Auditorium.
• A presentation by Dr. Jeffrey Shepherd is noon to 1:20 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 18, in Blumberg Auditorium. Title to be announced.
• Dr. William Guzman presents “Civil Rights in the Texas Borderlands: Dr. Lawrence A. Nixon and Black Activism” 3 to 4:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 19, in Liberal Arts Building, Room 319.
EPCC Black History Month — El Paso Community College will host events in February in celebration of Black History Month. This year’s theme is “Hallowed Grounds: Sites of African-American Memories” All events are 7 p.m. Mondays at EPCC’s Administrative Center Auditorium, Building A, 9050 Viscount. ‘Created Equal, America’s Civil Rights Struggle’ — Capoeira Quinto Sol and Samba Batucada Alma de Fogo perform capoeira, samba, and other related Afro-Brazilian arts at 10 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 20, at YWCA Shirley Leavell Branch, 10712 Sam Snead, as part of the El Paso Museum of History’s series to inspire conversations about the meaning of freedom and equality. Capoeira is a martial art developed by slaves in Brazil that combines music, defense, attacks, acrobatics, and dance as a form of expression during the slave trade.

Step for a Cause: Step Show and Comedy Night Feb. 19, in the Atkinson Recital Hall from 7 to 10 p.m. In its fifth year, this event features step teams from various fraternities and sororities, as well as a performance by All Def Digital Comedy.
Three events will be held Feb. 24. An in-depth discussion, titled “Partial Visions, Multiple Perspectives: Views on Diversity from Around the Nation,” will take place from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. Held in Room 50 of Milton Hall, the discussion will focus on the implications of diversity at the institutional level.
Afro-Cuban dance workshop and concert with world-renowned Cuban musical artist Danay Suarez. Suarez will perform and discuss the history of Afro-Cuban culture in terms of identity within the black and Latino communities at the workshop, which is 1 to 3 p.m. in the Corbett Center auditorium. A concert will follow from 7 to 10 p.m. in the Corbett Center ballrooms.
Community members may attend Moriba West African Drumming and Dance Thursday, Feb. 25. Led by Soriba Fofana, master drummer from Guinea, West Africa, the event will be from 7 to 10 p.m. in the Corbett Center ballrooms.
Black History Month Appreciation Dinner Feb. 26, in the Corbett Center ballrooms. The dinner begins at 7 p.m. and features keynote speaker Timothy Nelson.
