Equine herpes virus not a concern as Fiesta Del Sol races begin at Sunland Park

Sunland Park Racetrack & Casino lost 19 days of racing due to the outbreak of the equine herpes virus earlier this year, but the racing is now back.

Trainers and owners alike said they are not worried about the recent EHV-1 outbreak.

“Basically we are doing everything we do everyday,” Trainer Justin Evans said. “But we are doing it just about 100 times more.”

The director of marketing at Sunland Park Racetrack and Casino, Ethan Linder, said at this point it is just about remaining consistent.

“After the EHV-1 virus was present on the property, we went through a lot of protocols and procedures that we had not normally put in place,” Linder said. “And those policies and procedures are now in place today.”

The Fiesta Del Sol at the Park kicks off Saturday and will conclude Sunday evening. Tejano star Bobby Pulido will perform Saturday, and Mexican artist Ana Barbara will perform Sunday. Both concerts are free. Some big stakes are in store including the $200,000 Plum Pretty and the $415,000 Sunland Park Festival of Racing Stakes.
