Council discusses Chihuahuas ticket hike

Earlier this month ABC-7 ran a story on the Chihuahuas raising ticket prices.

Some fans were disappointed with the price hike and Tuesday the topic came up at the El Paso City Council meeting.

City Rep. Emma Acosta brought up the the ticket prices and wanted to explain to constituents why it’s going to cost more to watch a game.

“I started getting calls from the constituents and so I wanted to address it,” said Acosta.

Acosta said she wanted to find out for herself why ticket prices went up this season.

Grass seats will still be $5. Season seats will start at $7.50 per seat for each game
but advanced tickets will cost between $8 and $30.

The seats that were available $8 to $10 will now cost $11 to $15 depending on the day, and a high end $25 seat will now cost you up to $30.

Acosta had an explanation for constituents:

“Electric rates increased, just like everyone else’s did. The water rates increased and the cost of insurance increased(for the team).”

She also mentioned the increase in cost for providing fireworks.

Acosta also reminded fans of the contributions the Chihuahuas have made to the community.

“They participate in baseball clinics, hospital visits, school visits reading programs and mentor programs,” said Acosta.

In a past interview Chihuahuas general manager Brad Taylor said no sports or entertainment entities sit flat and a spokeswoman for the team also said they hold promotional events like “Pepsi’s Family Four Pack” which offers a discount price with food and drinks as well promotions that offer discounts to veterans.

“I can tell you the Chihuahuas have more than exceeded my expectations,” said El Paso Mayor Oscar Leeser.

Leeser notes it is not up to the city council to decide whether prices for entertainment are suitable or not.

“Our job as leaders of the community is to help the public sector to move forward and advance their business and make sure they are very successful in El Paso so by any means do we want to tell anybody to change their model,” Leeser said.

And there may be more promotions to come. Chihuahuas officials say promotional dates are still being worked out for the 2016 season.
