Cameasha Turner receives C-USA Spirit of Service Award
IRVING, TEXAS- UTEP senior women’s basketball guard Cameasha Turner received the Conference USA Winter Spirit of Service Award, league commissioner Judy MacLeod announced Thursday . In total 14 student-athletes across C-USA were so distinguished. The award recognizes the community service efforts of the league’s student-athletes based upon significant public service, good academic standing and participation in their elected sport.
The Spiritof Service Award is presented three times throughout the season, with the most-recent recipients coming from C-USA winters sports of men’s and women’s basketball, women’s swimming and diving and men’s and women’s indoor track and field.
Turner, an All C-USA first team and All C-USA defensive team honoree, was a leader for the Miners. She helped UTEP claim the C-USA regular-season title while equaling the school record for both league (16) and overall (29) victories. The Miners made a run to the quarterfinals of the WNIT. Turner contributed 13.1 ppg, 4.8 rpg, 2.0 spg and 1.5 apg while leading the team in field-goal percentage (49.5), free-throw percentage (77.3) and playing time/game (30.5 mpg).
She was a stalwart in the classroom by becoming the first Miner women’s basketball player to be named a CoSIDA Academic All-American (second team). Turner, who boasts a perfect 4.0 cumulative GPA in criminal justice, was also voted to the Academic All-District and C-USA Women’s Basketball All-Academic teams for the second straight year.
In the community the Dallas native volunteered with the Special Olympics, Children’s Hospital, Let’s SAAC Hunger and the UTEP Mini Basketball Clinic during the academic year. A frequent visitor of Special Olympics, Turner helped set up activities and games for the children to engage in. She also met with kids with cancer to help raise their spirits in their time of need.
