Las Cruces school bus drivers’ union says no strike Monday

A spokesman for the Las Cruces school bus drivers’ union says the drivers will not strike Monday.

The announcement came after the Las Cruces School Board voted against an injunction that would prevent a strike, but urged Student Transportation Services and the union to negotiate and resolve their issues. The concerns include safety issues, unsafe vehicles, lagging inspections, loading practice and high turnover of drivers.

No extension was signed, but there was a handshake agreement with Student Transportation Services. While both sides will go back to the bargaining table, and union representative Romero Hernandez says they are still on opposite sides in resolving the outstanding issues.

If negotiations fall through, drivers may go on strike Tuesday.
