to demolish a church in el paso’s lower valley … more than 1-hundred years after it was built. back in september, abc-seven showed you the san jose catholic church was falling apart. tonight, church officials confirm news they so desperately tried to prevent from happening. welcome back to abc-seven at six, i’m estela casas. and i’m rick cabrera. the san jose catholic church in el paso’s lower valley… at 81- hundred san jose road. that’s just north of the railroad tracks by yarbrough and alameda. abc-seven’s complete coverage continues live… … with reporter iris lopez. rick, estela. gates and contruction barrels now surround the san jose catholic church. what was once a place of worship is now just a building falling apart. “triste” sadness colors th emotions san jose catholic church parishioners.. lydia dekelly and her husband actually bought their home to be nearer to the 104 year-old church they’ve attended for years. by next week, it will no longer exist. 4:03 “th community of san jose is obviously upset, you know churches are important for people this is where baptisms weddings and funerals take place.” last year the el paso diocese closed the church for what were said to be minor structural problems. elizabeth last year: ” a structural study will just show that in fact the inside of the building is fine and it’s just the outside of the building that needs to be addressed.” now, a lack o maintenance is cited for the inability to salvage the building. 1:20 “parishioner are in charge of their parish, and so they have to do things like typical maintenance and some years ago some maintenance that was supposed to have been done on the church was not done.” 1:30 “things like roofing making sure that the window sills weren’t leaking and those kind of things. and it was left unattended.” th diocese brought in engineers to evaluate the situation. they said quick fixes in years past doomed the adobe structure. 2:20 “and the building at thi point will not be repairable.” as for the future of san jose catholic church? 4:40 “and th decision to what’s gonna happen to san jose church has not been made. is san jose going to be rebuilt somewhere else or is this it for san jose. that decision has not yet been made. and so for san jose parishioners this is a really hard thing.” bishop mark seitz issued a statement saying he is sad to see the much-loved adobe church go, but at certain point it is time to say goodbye. the demolition will begin monday. the zika virus may be something relatively
