Eastlake boys soccer falls to Brownsville Porter, 4-1, in Final Four
GEORGETOWN, Texas – The Eastlake boys soccer team finally met its match in an undefeated squad from Brownsville Porter High School in the 5A Final Four.
After entering the half in a scoreless draw, Porter answered with four straight goals in the second half to put the state semifinal showdown away. Porter eventually cruised to a 4-1 victory.
Jonathan Hernandez would add a late penalty kick for Eastlake’s lone score of the night.
“We battled the first half,” said Gibby Widdner, Eastlake’s head coach. “Second half, you know, they came out strong, and once you get down you’ve got to change some things up. And it didn’t work in our favor.”
Porter will meet Frisco Wakeland in the 5A state championship this weekend. Both teams enter the contest unblemished on the season.
The Eastlake boys team had never made it to the Final Four, and they’re proud of the showing they put on in the state tournament.
“Not everyone gets to say they got to State but we did,” said Eastlake’s Salvador Silva. “So, we’ll just learn from this next year and give everything we got. We were nervous, but it was a hell of a run.”
Eastlake’s run included a memorable victory in El Paso at the SAC over Jefferson in the third round. Brownsville Porter simply presented too many problems for the Falcons on Thursday night.
“We battled all day, but they were the better team,” said Widner.
