Woman says man stabbed her service dog

Jeanette Katt tells ABC-7 a man stabbed her service dog and now she’s left with the medical bills –and possibly without a dog.

The owner of the dog said her service dog was stabbed in the neck. Now, there’s a chance the dog could be suffering from nerve damage, which could prevent her from performing her duties.

“She’s everything to me. She goes absolutely everywhere with me. Without her I can’t leave my house,” Katt said.

Emotional and heartbroken Katt said her dog Harley has changed her life.

The dog isn’t just a pet, she said –it’s her security.

Katt has been diagnosed with PTSD and agoraphobia; an anxiety disorder which causes the sufferer to feel their environment is dangerous. In some cases, victims stay locked in their homes for weeks.

“I was severely tortured and abused. I had an ex-husband that kidnapped me, locked me up in a basement for two weeks, tortured me and put a gun to my head and pulled the trigger,” Katt said.

A therapy dog was prescribed to Katt. She’s had Harley for more than seven years.

She was rushing to get her granddaughter to karate class when Harley got away from her.

“She pulled out from my hand and I heard her bark maybe three four times,” said Katt.

Katt said that when she got to the bottom of the stairs, “I heard her squeal. I turned and saw him stab her in the neck. I saw her drop lifeless I thought she was dead.”

Katt said a maintenance worker at the apartment complex stabbed Harley with a utility knife and left the scene.

Harley is trained to sense seizures and panic attacks and to keep Katt safe.

“She is trained to alert me that there is somebody that I do not see, that I do not know,” Katt said.

Katt says Harley never made contact with the worker who attacked her dog.

Now she’s left with taking care of a service dog who at this point can’t walk.

“I would like to see something happen if it doesn’t I need help with her medical bills,” Katt said.

Katt said police told her they couldn’t press charges because Harley is a dog.

ABC-7 also spoke to witnesses who say Harley never made contact with the worker.

The manager of the maintenance company said she’s out of town and hasn’t spoken to her employee about the incident. Until she does, she declined comment.
