Chihuahuas split Sunday doubleheader
Carlos Pimentel pitched a complete game shutout as the El Paso Chihuahuas defeated the Salt Lake Bees 7-0 in Game 1 of Sunday’s doubleheader. It was the third individual shutout in Chihuahuas’ history, with the other two also coming in doubleheader games – Michael Nix on May 24, 2014 at Tacoma and Robbie Erlin on September 5, 2015 at Reno.
El Paso’s offense scored in four different innings and collected 14 hits. Hunter Renfroe went 2-for-4 with a solo home run, his third consecutive game with a homer. Ryan Schimpf went 1-for-3 with a two-run homer and a sacrifice fly. All nine El Paso starting batters had at least one hit.
The Game 1 victory was the Chihuahuas’ third consecutive win.
The El Paso Chihuahuas left the tying run at third base in the last inning and almost pulled off an impressive comeback in Salt Lake’s 6-5 Game 2 win.
The Chihuahuas trailed 6-0 in the sixth inning when Carlos Asuaje, Alex Dickerson and Hunter Renfroe hit back-to-back-to-back home runs on three consecutive pitches to make the score 6-4. It was the first time the Chihuahuas have hit three home runs in a row in team history.
Down 6-4 in the top of the seventh in the seven-inning game, Jason Hagerty hit a pinch-hit RBI triple to put the tying run at third base with one out. Manuel Margot then lined out to third and Asuaje popped out to third to end the game.
El Paso starter Jeremy Guthrie allowed six runs in five innings of work in the loss.
