The Public’s Right to Know

According to EPISD trustees the agency is being flooded with open records requests.

Today four trustees, including the board president, attended an open government seminar hosted by the Freedom of Information Foundation of Texas.
The group works to protect First Amendment Rights and make sure the public’s business is conducted in public.

Members of the KVIA newsroom were also there learning the latest on how to make sure stories, like the EPISD cheating scandal, are told.

Trustee Chuck Taylor worries people in his district may not know how to file an open records request.

“They can get information all the time. They might have to go through a little exercise of filling out a document for the request. but this helps transparency,” said Taylor.

Trustee Diane Dye was anxious to learn the latest on open government and believed the seminar would help EPISD.

“We are a very transparent organization here at EPISD and we have been constantly getting open records requests. And we want to make sure that those open records requests are honored,” said Dye.

The EPISD trustees also attended a seminar regarding open meeting laws. ABC 7 was also there to learn the latest on protecting the public’s right to know.
