Political group eyes Texas secession, hailing vote by GOP platform committee

Those who support the movement for Texas independence are celebrating a vote by two-thirds of the of the Texas Republican Platform Committee calling for an independence referendum on the party platform.

The referendum will now move towards a full vote of the delegates at the convention, according to a news release from the Texas Nationalist Movement (TNM).

TNM President Daniel Miller said the movement for Texas independence is gaining momentum. “The people of Texas want an open debate and a vote on the issue of independence,” Miller said, “None more so than Texas Republicans.”

Nathan Smith, TNM Executive Director, said there was “weak” opposition at the convention to Texans having a vote on independence. “It’s understandable when 55% of the RPT platform is dedicated to calling out the failures and excessive overreach of the Federal Government,” Smith said.

According to TNM, the next step will be action by the permanent platform committee, followed by a full floor vote of the convention.

A handful of Texas Republican district or county conventions passed resolutions calling for a vote on secession in March, according to the Houston Chronicle. It recently reached out to GOP officials in counties listed by the TNM. According to an article published by the paper, 10 officials responded and all confirmed passage of the resolutions.

The goal of TNM, according to its website, is to “secure and protect the political, cultural and economic independence of the nation of Texas and to restore and protect a constitutional Republic.”
