Incumbent County Tax Assessor-Collector reelected

Incumbent County Tax Assessor-Collector Ruben Gonzalez has won his first election.

Gonzalez maintained an eight-point lead over Rocha all night long. With 98 percent of the votes counted, he had 8,585 votes against her 7,411.

Gonzalez was appointed to the office after the former tax assessor-collector, Victor Flores, retired in February of 2015.

On his website, Gonzalez took credit for resolving contract issues with the City of El Paso’s Tax Collector, identifying vehicle registration tax evaders, and developing new methods to collect motor vehicle sales taxes that allowed the county to collect “new sales tax revenue.”

Rocha has accused her former boss of “unethical leadership.”

He questioned her integrity by releasing old reprimands he obtained through an Open Records request.

Gonzalez does not face an opponent in the November general election.
