ABC-7 learns name of woman killed in I-10 crash, police not identifying victims
ABC-7 has learned the name of one of the two women killed Monday in a crash on I-10 East near Sunland Park.
A friend of the family, who asked to remain anonymous, told ABC-7 he knew one of the women, Virginia Garcia, who is from Juarez and was in her early 50’s. He added that Garcia’s sister, whose name he did not know, was also killed in the fiery seven vehicle crash.
Garcia and her sister were traveling in the car that was struck and pinned under a semi-truck and burst into flames. They were believed to be traveling to Juarez after Garcia spent the day taking care of her sister’s grandchildren in West El Paso.
According to police, as east-bound traffic began to slow in the area, the driver of the semi, 27-year-old Fateh Singh from Fresno, failed to control his speed and struck several cars. Two other vehicles rolled over, one of them coming to rest on the Westbound lanes of I-10. In all, five people were transported to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
A viewer sent us video of a man being handcuffed at the scene. ABC-7’s cameras later spotted the same man sitting on a guardrail near the crash scene as the fire continued to burn.
ABC-7 asked police Wednesday to take a look at the video to see whether the man is Singh, the driver of the semi. But police would not confirm that, pointing out instead that no charges have been filed, and they wouldn’t identify anyone that was not charged.
The friend of the family told ABC-7 Garcia leaves behind a husband and three children who are devastated by her death.
