Residents ask for help after six homes are destroyed by a fire in Chaparral, New Mexico

Several families were left without a home Tuesday as a fire spread from structure to structure on the 800 block of Mesilla View.

Residents tell us they just want to rebuild and will take whatever material you can part with, including wood, scrap metal or just household items.

The group of homes is on Mesilla View Drive. That’s in Chaparral off the U.S 54.

“It’s a rumor a little boy was playing with fire,” said resident Robert Jara. “And the fire jumped into neighbors property.”

Otero County Sheriff Benny House tells ABC-7 about six homes caught fire just north of the state line near U.S. 54. All are a total loss including five vehicles.

“It’s really sad,” Jara said. “A lot of people build there homes with a lot of sacrifice and now they’re gone.”

House said the fires broke out at about 5 p.m. Tuesday and every time firefighters thought they had it under control, it spread to another house. The winds made it more difficult to contain the fires and three to four homes are a total loss, House said.

“It started in the back of my house,” said resident Antonio Castro. “Then it started growing. Then it went to the other house. Then I thought it was going to get near the gas tank. So I started panicking, calling 911. The operator on 911 was like, ‘I can’t hear you there’s wind. ‘”‘

No major injuries have been reported.
