more rains, flooding and deaths across texas… as severe storms leaving an impact for memorial day. but it’s a party in el paso! a look at the late night action going on downtown. and an international artists hoping to bring more awareness and action to the ongoing problems in our sister city. and in stormtrack weather, iris! this is all the news you need to start your sunday, may 29th. abc-7’s “good morning el paso weekend starts right now! good morning and thank you for joing us… i’m andrew j. polk. it’s the second major set of floods to happen in texas this year. across the state, cities are getting pounded by rain. atleast 4 people are dead and 3 are missing. the bodies of two missing drivers were found yesterday. after torrential rain over filled rivers and waterways. the threat of severe weather had lessened in texas over the long memorial day weekend… and the focus now is on homes that could be flooded by slowly rising waters. evacuation orders were issued today for parts of two texas cities along the brazos river near houston. other parts of the u.s is also experiencing heavy flooding—including kansas. today– the search for a missing 11-year-old boy in kansas will resume. according to a fire chief in wichita, the boy fell into this creek friday night. his friends say he was swept away while trying to cross the creek. according to the fire chief, there’s little chance at this point to find the boy alive. he said the rescuers scoured the creek saturyda, sometimes going shoulder-to- shoulder. they also used divers, helicopters and search-and-rescue dogs. rescue crews plan to re-assess the operation this morning if the boy is not found by then. …stormtrack weather now! let’s get your first forecast with stormtracker iris lopez dry southwest flow aloft will continue through tuesday, with very few clouds and temperatures a bit above normal. winds aloft will turn more northwest by wednesday and east winds at the surface will bring in fair amount of low level moisture. some thunderstorms are possible…mostly from the rio grande valley east. by this next weekend the upper flow turns to the north while at the surface some moisture remains. we can expect an isolated thunderstorm into the weekend. temperatures will fall below normal wednesday through friday and then back to near normal the rest of the weekend. crews are still fighting the fire in the guadalupe mountains. if you had plans on heading out there to camp anytime soon– listen up. for the public’s safety and the firefighters – closures remain in effect. the fire is now 70 percent crews are still fighting the fire in the guadalupe mountains. if you had plans on heading out there to camp anytime soon– listen up. for the public’s safety and the firefighters – closures remain in effect. the fire is now 70 percent contained – after burning more than 14-thousand acres. three weeks ago the flames started because of lightning. there are more than 200 personnel scouting and monitoring the roads – to keep the fire contained. for the full list of closures visit kvia dot com. and an update to another fire in new mexico. the fire in the gila national forest near luna county remains at 8 hundred 15 acres. according to officials the fire was started on may 21st by lightning. 1 hundred 5 firefighters are working to put out the fire. so far there are no closurs or trail restrictions in place at the forest. day 1 is over now time for day 2. for the sixth year in a row the neon desert music festival has taken over downtown. yesterday thousands took over the streets. and for the first time in 3 years, the festival was once again held at san jacinto plaza. abc 7’s jerry najera spent his saturday at the festival. he has the story: as the gates opened music fans started trickling in many exited to see their favorite artists ” came to see future” “tyler t creator” “future” “the music hear for the music” and i wasn’t just all about the music artists from as far as san diego and juarez painted murals in the middle of streets nats food vendors served up tacos even skate ramps graced the festival but for many the opening of san jacinto plaza made a huge impact on the festival “i was born and raised here and it broke my heart that it took so long for it to be shut down but it’s better than ever” “i really li the grass here it’s great scenery i think it’s great for the city” “it creates something new and i brings something different to el paso it opens up a whole new level for neon desert and it’s honestly beautiful” an although the night wasn’t over for those enjoying the dance they are already thinking about next year “would you come bac again? oh definitely” “eve if i didn’t like anyone in the line up i will come back” another 35 bands are set to take the stage. today gates open at 3 and the fest goes on until about 1-30 in the morning. an international artist is looking to shed some light on some of the terrible issues that plagued juarez in the past. project unknown is an art project by lise bjorne, a norwegian artist trying to educate people about the horrors women have endured in juarez. bjorne has embroidered small cloth labels with the names of missing and murdered women in cd. juarez for ten years and she’s taken the workshops all over the world where volunteers have helped record the names of victims next to the word ‘unknown’ in a dozen languages. bjorne says she hopes to spread the word of what juarez and its lost daughters have gone through by involving international communities in the storytelling: “when you are embroidering that name and you hear the story of… not that woman but the women, i think you listen better” bjorne is set to present some of her work to mexican government officials at the capital next week. this holiday weekend is more than just an extra day from work or school. although for some people memorial day is celebrated by cookouts and spending time with friends and family. the meaning behind memorial day is to remember those who have made the ultimate sacrifice fighting for our freedom. and it’s on this holiday that a group of el pasoans has gathered to learn more about the sacrifice and traditions that some say made our nation’s existance possible. :13 1:22 nats – gunshots at the epcc law enforcement training academy, about a dozen el pasoans are spending their memorial day weekend a little differently. nats – shot “a lot of people give july 4th, 1776 as the birth of this nation. but we became americans on april 19th, 1775.” that was the “shot heard round the world as then-colonists resisted the redcoats on lexinton green… and is used as a teaching tool by the revolutionary war veterans association in small classes like this across the country. “the instructor here say the class is as much about civics as it is marksmanship, teaching the values they say this country was founded on along with better shooting.” “it’s n something you can necessarily lear off of a video game. it’s something that’s got to be done, physically done. and there’s a lot of little details to it, to be an excellent rifleman. and that’s what we want, to at least give them the tools that they need to become an excellent rifleman shot if they are so inclined to do so.” organizers are hoping this class of about a dozen will help attract more to future events in our area… drawing out young and old, veteran and civilian alike to learn more about shooting and our history. “they give person-to-person help to everyone, and they’re giving my son kevin a lot of instruction.” “i think it’s really good thing. it’s good to teach people how to shoot with proper technique and with like these traditional techniques. it think it’s a very good thing and i don’t know, i’ve just had a lot of fun so far.” “t stuff they show me, i learn more how to shoot, and be better.” andrew j. polk, abc-7. to find out more about project appleseed, you can click on this story over on our website, k-v-i-a dot com. with the music festival, then fest and plenty of other activities to do this weekend.. here’s another thing to do on top of all the other events going on. in las cruces– the red, white & brew festival is going on this weekend at nmsu. 14 wineries and four breweries are on hand for people to try. you also get a taste of some out of town favorites – as well from all over arizona. the owner of don quijote in los alamos says they’re excited for folks to expand their taste buds: “it’s a chance for people t taste our products. it’s also a way for us to get out word out.” red, white & brew will be around until monday. so you have plenty of time to check it out. it’s not technically hurricane season yet… but coming up on good morning el paso weekend… that doesn’t mean storms aren’t already ramping up. what’s coming to the east coast this morning. and later – controversey on all sides! the legal struggles all major candidates in the race for the presidency are going through right now. it is , right now we’ll take a live look at traffic this morning: and in stormtrack weather, iris! stormtrack weather is next! you’re watching abc-7… where news comes first!
