LCPD identify elderly couple involved in Jornada Road murder-suicide

The elderly couple involved in April’s murder-suicide on the East Mesa were Theodore Schmitz and Viola Schmitz, according to Las Cruces police.

Their bodies were discovered shortly after 11 a.m. on Thursday, April 28 when a caregiver asked police to check up on the couple.

When police officers entered the home on the 5900 block of Jornada Road, they discovered the bodies in the master bedroom.

An investigation led detectives to believe the 83-year-old husband shot and killed his 82-year-old wife before turning the gun on himself.

Detectives learned both husband and wife had health issues that required extensive medical attention.

Detectives have not been able to locate the couple’s relatives.
