To attend Harvard summit, 6th-grader must raise money

hoping to get a chance to attend harvard… for a leadership conference. and she’s getting help from some very talented friends. abc-7’s andrew j. polk has more. helena rincon is a sixth grader at the el paso leadership academy… and is trying to raise money to get to a leadership camp at a very presigious location. “it was like a drea come true because i’ve always wanted to go there.” the middle schooler was invited to attend the ambassador leaders camp at harvard, but it will cost a few thousand dollars for the full program and travel. “it’s very important for me because it’s going to take place in harvard, and i’ve always wanted to go to that university. and it’ll also – in the camp it’ll teach you to be a leader, how to be a better person, and how to help out your community.” she’s raised some online and gotten more in person by selling candy in school and now bookmarks and bracelets. she’s made enough for the down payment and first installments … but is still short of her goal. “w want to get involved not just with the arts, but with our future.” that’s where amali mondragon and her band, the chamanas come in. they’ll be holding a fundraiser sunday for rincon. she was a student of mondragon’s in the tocando program with the el paso youth symphony orchestra. “elen is part of our future, and she’s a very strong one. so we want to encourage people like elena and children like elena to start pursuing bigger things, you know? so i think that’s why we want to get involved.” something rincon definitley appreciates the help with. “i is a lot of hard work.” andre j. polk, abc-7 the fundraiser will be sunday at the “coco.bar” on 15 lee trevi starting at at 3 pm. for more info on that and her go- fund-me page, you can click on this story over on k-v-i-a dot com.
