YISD mourns student’s death

A 15-year-old girl who was struck while crossing Alemeda Avenue on May 20 died of her injuries.

Ysleta Independent School District identified the girl as Cynthia Meza.

Meza and a 15-year-old boy were on the crosswalk on the 8600 block of Alameda when they were hit. It happened near Old County Road in the Lower Valley in front of Ysleta High School.

The driver, 47-year old Melissa Rios Perez, did not yield to the pedestrians, police said. A police spokesman told ABC-7 the case has now been referred to the district attorney’s office for review.

YISD released the following statement: “The Ysleta Independent School District is extremely saddened to learn about the passing of Cynthia Meza, an Ysleta High School student. We send our heartfelt condolences to her family, friends, and the Ysleta High School community during this time of loss.
Grief counselors will be at Ysleta High School this Monday and Tuesday to assist students and staff as needed.”
