LCPS board to discuss posssible resignation of superintendent

The Las Cruces School Board will discuss the possible resignation of Superintendent Stan Rounds.

Superintendent Rounds has been with the district for nine years. His possible resignation was added to the agenda for Tuesday’s special meeting.

The board will discuss a possible severance agreement, acceptance of resignation and appointment of an interim superintendent.

The item–which will be discussed in executive session, was added by school board vice president Chuck Davis.

Davis tells ABC-7 Rounds hasn’t submitted a letter of resignation but confirms the subject will be discussed Tuesday.

Superintendent Rounds, meanwhile, has not returned a request for comment.

Rounds has experienced a number of hot issues arise during his tenure supervising the public schools.

Rounds got into a series of heated exchanges with the Public Education Department
over teacher’s absences and their effect on evaluations in 2015.

In May, the board of education approved the district’s budget of $338 million dollars, which includes $187 million in state funding.

The budget is currently under review by the state public education department and changes the department made were discussed in a meeting Thursday.

The department approved 49 staff reductions and removed the purchase of vehicles.

District officials, meanwhile, urged teachers will no be laid off.

But the reason why Rounds’ resignation was added to the agenda is still unclear.

Davis and board president Maria Flores remained tight-lipped Saturday, saying it was a personnel matter. Flores would only add the agenda speaks for itself.

ABC-7 also contacted the American Teachers Federation of New Mexico but they were not able to get to us before the story aired.

The district spokeswoman referred ABC-7 to Tuesday’s agenda and Rounds has not returned our calls for comment.
