an el paso police officer on the other side of the law. why he remains behind bars this morning in the state capital. as the investigation of the orlando massacre continues. authorities are getting a clearer picture of what went on hours before the gunman opened fire. a very good morning el paso, las cruces, and juarez. i’m stephanie valle. a live look at stormtrack doppler radar is showing… currently around our region… here’s your day planner for today… expect skies, capital — and can expect to be on leave once he gets back to the borderland. police in austin say he caused a deadly wreck because he was drunk. el paso police confirm — 26-year- old alan dieguez is a 3-year veteran of the force. this mugshot is courtesy of the williamson county jail. at this time, he’s only charged with d-w-i and unlawful carrying of a firearm — but he could face additional charges. the crash happened around one o’clock in the morning yesterday in williamson county. that’s about 600 miles east of el paso. authorities say dieguez was speeding down i-35 when he crashed into an 18-wheeler. this is video from a- b-c affiliate k-vue. the driver of a second 18-wheeler trying to avoid the debris — lost control and caught fire. troopers say a third 18-wheeler also caught fire after hitting the debris. one person died. happening today– the first set of railways for the downtown street project will be installed. this morning oregon street between glory road and cincinnati avenue is closed. good morning el paso’s denise olivas is live with the details … denise? it’s best to avoid oregon street all together because so much construction will be done in that area to accommodate the downtown streetcar project. it’s a five-step process that includes removing all the pavement then welding the rail segments. level the ground– that alone will take three to six weeks. the rail segments– each measuring about 415 feet long– will be installed and welded. then a slab of concrete will be poured around the rails. it’ll take about two to three weeks to set. and lastly, crews will repair and smooth out the street. in the meantime– you can expect closures in place. as crews lay the tracks in this area– others crews are preparing to do the same along the nearly five-mile route of the downtown streetcar project. this will be the first time in at least 42- years – el paso will have new rails in place. now to new information — abc-7 has uncovered more details about the man involved in a 5- hour standoff with el paso police. officials say 48- year-old benjamin ritter is a suspect in a robbery. the u.s marshals office and police tried to take him into custody on monday evening. but he locked himself inside an apartment in west el paso — on the 52- hundred block of carousel. ritter was frequently a fitness expert guest on local t-v stations, including abc-7. this video from about a decade ago on abc-7 at noon. he also made guest appearances on the k-l-a-q morning show. abc-7 learned the details of the robbery case in which ritter is accused. he’s one of 4 suspects. warrants were issued for ritter, along with jessica erwin, alfredo alvarado, and kimberly peterson. police say they robbed a 36-year-old man in april, and held him against his will. until monday — ritter was the only one on the loose. details continue to emerge in the orlando gunman’s plan to attack the pulse nightclub. investigators say omar mateen went to the club, paid the entry fee, and went inside. at some point though, he left. he would return two hours later to carry out his plan- officials are still working out what mateen did in the two hours he was not at the club. authorities also say mateen bought plane tickets to san francisco for himself, his wife, and his child in july. his wife told officials he left the house that saturday angry- and with a bag of guns. his wife, noor salman, has retained an attorney since she was initially questioned. in the race for the white house — it’s donald trump versus hillary clinton on the economy… clinton says trump is dangerous for the economy… while trump defending himself fresh from a campaign shakeup… after firing his embattled campaign manager. abc’s lauren lyster has more. it’s your voice … your vote. in the race for president…the gloves are off and the economy’s in focus… trump: she has a bad temperament, she would do so badly with the economy donald trump taking on hillary clinton in a sitdown with abc’s david muir…after she blasted the presumptive gop nominee for 45 minutes in this ohio speech… taking aim at the billionaire businessman’s business acumen. clinton: ” just like he shoul not have his finger on the button he should not have his finger on the economy” clinton: he’s written a lot of books about business, they all seem to end with chapter 11 trump responding… trump: okay, so what i’ve done is i’ve used, brilliantly, the laws of the country. and, not personally, just corporate. and if you look at people like myself that are the highest levels of business, they use, many of them have done it many, many times. when it comes to campaign finance… public filings revealing the presumptive gop nominee raised $3 million in may to clinton’s $25.5 million…trump downplaying the significance. sot trump: “i’ll be honest i’ve never raised money for this before because i’ve never done it before i think i’d be very good at it concerned i’d be very happy to self-fund” tag: and on the trai today, expect the next round of this fight… clinton delivers a policy speech about the economy – making the case she’s better for the job of handling it..while trump is slated to give a speech attacking hillary and bill clinton. lauren lyster abc news washington. 6-07… weather and traffic on the 7s… …abc-7 traffic track … now it’s time to take a look at the tx-dot traffic cams… the cities largest district has a new budget this morning. what home owners can expect in their taxes coming up. budget this morning. what home owners can expect in their taxes coming up. and this is abc-7, where news comes first!
