Residents on Leroy Bonse Drive frustrated with speeders

saying they’ve had way too many problems with speeders. neighbors living on leroy bonse “bonz” street between vista de sol and bob mitchell say it’s a dangerous stretch and the city is now looking for solutions to slow fast drivers down but residents say attempts by the city in the past have actually made the road even more dangerous. abc-7’s jerry najera is live with the story … rick estela as soon as pulled into leroy bonse street to shoot some video i saw several mail box’s and cars that were damaged. neighbors say it’s because of islands in the middle of the road the city installed several years ago. leroy bonse street on el paso’s east side has had some issues. “this is a freeway betwee montwood and vista del sol and that’s the way everybody treats it” burt harkness has lived on leroy bonse street for 19 years. he thought once the city got wind of the problem they’d put speed bumps “this is a major thouroughfar for fire department and ambulance so they didn’t want to put speed humps they didn’t want to put speed bumps” so instead the city’s street and maintenance department installed these islands to slow down traffic. “it didn’t slow down th speeders at all people are still speeding up and down leroy bonse but it also made a major safety concern for anyone that lives in the neighborhood” “the signs bee knocked down i don’t know how many times” davi hernandez tells me since the city has put up the islands his neighbors cars have gotten hit “one..two. three.i’d say about four or five” you can see other residents have had issues with their mailbox’s as well “it’s a safety concern because drivers don’t have room to get over from someone parked in the street” city officials from the streets and maintenance department held a meeting for residents in the area “in thi case we went back and tested and found that some speeding trends were occuring” justin bass from th department says they are now considering installing speed bumps down the street. “we found that th center medians were slowing traffic but not to the best that we think it can happen so that’s why we want to add the speed cushions to help slow the traffic further so i do think they will be effective” residents are content they are installing the speed cushions but they still wished they could have the islands removed. bass from the streets department says the’ll likely have more public meeting on the issue. it is safe to say that there is a buzz around the new street car project.
