LCPD stress civil dialogue between civilians and police during traffic stops

In light of what has happened around the country, the Las Cruces Police Department is encouraging a civil conversation between police officers and drivers to ensure the safety of both parties during a traffic stop.

Las Cruces Police Deputy Chief Justin Dunivan explained what not to do when being pulled over. “Upon contact with the officer, be respectful and don’t make any abrupt movements” Dunivan says.

Police officers don’t know who is inside the vehicle and the initial conversation between the driver and officer is paramount, Dunivan said.

Las Cruces Police suggest informing the officer if you have a weapon in the vehicle.

Dunivan says the officer will most likely “separate” the driver from the weapon by asking the driver to get out of the vehicle. The goal is to decrease a possible threat to safeguard the officer and the driver.

Officers also ask that you be cordial and respectful. Remember, the best time to fight a traffic citation is not while the officer is issuing it, but when you get your day in court.
