El Paso GOP delegate witnesses Melania’s speech, Sen. Cruz constroversy

One of the El Pasoans attending the Republican National Convention as a delegate simply described his experience as “amazing.”

“The convention itself has been a lot of fun. To say it was interesting would be putting it mildly,” Mark Dunham said. He is a retired army intelligence officer who serves as a state Republican Committee executive.

Dunham said he feels safe and secure at the convention, despite protests outside the arena. “The City of Cleveland has done an excellent job of getting everything ready as far as security and things of that nature,” he said.

One of the highlights of the convention for Dunham was meeting Eric Trump. “They are as down to earth as you can imagine when you sit there and talk to him one-on-one it’s surprising.”

Dunham said listening to Tiffany Trump’s speech about her father on the first day shined a new light on the presidential candidate. “His youngest daughter, I thought, gave a very good insight to the man as a person and I think that has been a very strong reflection of him as an individual.”

The El Pasoan was with the Texas delegation in the wake of Senator Ted Cruz’s speech, which resulted in the former presidential hopeful being booed off the stage when he failed to endorse Trump and instead asked Republicans to “vote their conscience.”

“If somebody was coming after my wife or my family or something of that nature I’d probably be very defensive myself,” Dunham said, “but that’s sort of mano-a-mano. You need to have that conversation between the two of you and not be airing your dirty laundry in front of the nation.”

Dunham says perhaps one of the more memorable moments of the convention was when Donald Trump Jr. touted his father’s ability to lead the nation. “He blew it out of the water. I was extraordinarily impressed, as was the delegation. He did extraordinarily well.”
