TXDOT special report
exactly the bridge to nowhere will come down … we do know when the paisano bridge that crosses i-10 near sunland park will come down. this sunday i-10 east will be completely closed from 3 a-m sunday to 5 a-m monday to start the process. then the following week it’s i-10 west that will be closed sunday from 3 a-m to monday at 5 a-m. but those closures will pale in comparison with what’s to come. tonight … we’re looking ahead to the major closures on the horizon as tx- dot juggles two concurrent construction projects. 8:02 “it just made sense to get in there and do it one time, accept the pain and move forward.” and the pain is obvious. scenes like this have become an everyday occurrence. that’s because to save money and time … the border west expressway which will connect to transmountain … and the go 10 project which will add 5 miles of frontage road on the westside … are being done at the same time. and that means closures … lots of closures. the two biggest ones will be next year … but first … 8:26 “what we’re trying to do is over the next six months get the doniphan to paisano connection and the mcnutt to paisano connection open again so that west siders will have two additional alternatives to get into town or get east.” that connection will b necessary because the resler overpass has to be taken down and replaced. 10:46 what about resler? how long is that looking? 10:48 “resler is not quite as bad. it’s also a steel structure but it’s only over i-10. so we can probably get that done in a weekend shutdown or maybe three days.” then comes the biggie … the sunland park overpass. 10:13 “it’s not only over i-10, it’s over the existing sunland park bridge which will be widened as part of the go 10 project. so, trying to take that down is probably going to exceed what we can do in a weekend, so it may be an extended period of shutting down i-10. but that’s why we’ll want to have as much of the alternative routing that we can possibly have in place before we do that.” biele knows firsthand how painful this process will be … he commutes from the westside everyday … and he’s confident it will all be worth it in the end. 15:40 “fo awhile el paso has kinda been a limiting factor on commerce into texas because of the condition of i-10 because we don’t have the frontage roads and we don’t have a loop around el paso so as we are getting all of these completed and can really get into fixing i-10 not only will el paso be a much better place to live and to work but also won’t be that restricting valve on commerce into texas.” for now … we have to take our medicine … but we’re trying to help. download the abc-7 stormtrack weather app. it gives you real time updates on how traffic is flowing and if there are any closures
